Ok,

I got a weird one. A person in our building has become addicted to falling for 419 scams. He has allready lost substantial amounts of money, but still keeps going on and on and on.. Probably beleiving that one day the story would be true.

He will not listen to reason, even though he lost, he does not really want to beleive it are scams.

Has anyone seen this before? What do do with this kind of person besides closing down all the internet access.

Cheers

Do you know this person's family very well?
Do they have a spouse that you could talk to about the situation? That way they could "keep an eye" on them.

Otherwise I would send them to read the information YOU have found out about these scams on the internet. Have them stop by this site and see how many people are victims.

Yes worried I have seen this happen before with victims I have worked with, one poor woman got so frustrated she sent her foreign husband back home where he came from to protect what was left of their life savings and the life they worked so hard to build.

Honey you have to get to the family of this person and tell them that not only is this person addicted to getting scammed but also by repeatedly dealing with scammers this person can also be arrested and charged with aiding a scam operation or scammers. You have to understand to take part in a scam a person unwittingly participates, but after being told that theya re being scammed and still continue to go for more, that is a willful participant in the furtherance of a crime, in this case a felony crime.

Punnishment for such a crime can land a person in prison for many years.

Yes worried I have come across several serial victims.

The only way I can describe it is that they behave like alcoholics; there is no cure!. They have to lose everything or throw away their computer.

It is extremely frustrating, but if the family are already aware of the situation, there is nothing you can do.

Possibility also exists in the victim going to do some real prison time. Knowing that these are scams and continuing to go along with them is not falling victim over and over , it is technically aiding the scammers and makes this person guilty of furtherance of a crime in the eyes of the law.

I just had an intervention with my parents yesterday, They have unfortunatly been falling for the 419 scam for the last 2 and a half years. They are almost completely out of money, on the verge of losing their home and business, but for some reason they just cant stop. I wish there was a support group they could atttend. I have been trying to all night to find some sort of support but there is nothing available. This is a real addiction! It sounds funny "being addicted to giving your money away" These Nigerians have them under there thumbs. I called the FBI and they can't do anything about it. If any one has been a victim of 419 scam and lives in Utah I would love to talk to you, and find out how you got help to stop.

I agree with you . . . it is an addiction. I have compared it to a person who gambles. They even if they are not "winning" the keep going and going and no one can talk them out of it.

I looks like my father is addicted to these scams. He keeps believing these criminals, persists in emailing them, and sending away his money. He has people, including myself, my brother, and my step-mother, telling him that these emails that he receives are scams. Here's the thing. We (the family) plan on doing an intervention this weekend (my father lives at the other end of the state). Do you have any advice or can you point to websites that will help us. We do have information that the scams he is involved in are scams from other websites. What I'm looking for are consequences (legal if any) to his actions, or support sites that can help us create a strategy to talk to him. I have to agree with other posts, that equate this to alcohol addiction. I think this compulsive behavioral disorder (though I have no real proof of that other than his recent behavior). What can we do???

concerned daughter, I am glad you and your family are wanting to help your father. Scamwarners is an excellent site. Some of the members on there are in law enforement and should be able to asnwer any questions you may have.

Another great site is Cyber Crime Ops. They also have members who are in law enforement.

Best of luck to you and your family.

EDIT: Below is a link of a post that was made on this site of a victime who is being charged.

Concerned, what kind of scam is your father is involved in? (Next of Kin, Love, Lotto, etc.)

Here's some additional anti fraud websites you can look over if you want in addition to this one:

General Advance Fee Fraud

http://www.fraudaid.com (org?)

I have often compared this to alcohol or gambling addictions . . . sometimes the person needs to hit rock bottom before they see if for themselves.

Any additional information you can give us on the scam will help us to give you more information, but I do know of victims that have been arrested. Here is some info on that
http://www.fraudaid.com/solution_center ... -13-08.pdf

What is something that your father holds dear? Here is why I ask . . . I know someone that is not wealthy, and I suspected that they might need to be on the look out for ID Theft. They said to me "Who would want to steal my identity?" and I said that they could clean out their bank account and they said "Not like there is much in there" . . . but when I mentioned that the person could open new accounts, take out loans in their name, and then the debit collectors would come after HIM and could take away his land that he owns THAT made him pay attention and check things out.

Here is a blog I did about a scam victim who was arrested
