Just wanted to add this FYI, I'm a tutor, I have received 2 requests to tutor where the "parent" is out of the country, & theywant to pay 2 months in advance. They want to send you extra via check or money order so that you can pay the student's caretaker. Got my bogus check today & posted on IC3

Could you post the name and email address of the person you were in contact with, and any other info they gave you like address or phone number. Sometimes others will google this info, and if you have it posted on here they can find it and know that it is a scam.

I recently saw an ad on craigslist for tutoring a 13 yr old (very well behaved, but shy.) I responded to the ad, and received an email and phone call today from the author of the scam. Of course the email has instructions regarding cashing a check and wiring money. I was also given an ups tracking no. I looked it up and the check was originally mailed from lansing, MI, yet I am suppose to wire money to Eaton Rapids, MI. (Hey, I thought this guy was from the U.K.) So, I began to research other cities on craigslist, and found 4 other cities with the same email. I flagged them all. Needless to say, I will not be cashing any checks, but I wanted to post the perpetrator's name and phone number sent to me in an email, and also the name of the receiver of the western union.
Louis Smith -- supposedly from the U.K., but called with an African accent. His number in the email is +44 70359 17386.

I am to wire money to Amy Morris, Eaton Rapids, MI, 48827.

I hope this information is helpful to anyone who responds to similar ads. My advice would be to check various cities for the same ad, if the ad looks suspicious, or if the author is from another country.

Hello All!

Yep, I got another fish on the line!! Amy Morris is not only a tutor but is a "Mystery Shopper" Too. I Just got my check today for Mr. Neil Andbobb and tommorrow I should get one for Mr. Willie Layer. I am suppose to forward balance to Amy Morris in MI. Below is the info for my "Secret Assignment" emailed to me. FYI, have had the WorkWithMystery02@yahoo.com shut down. It was WorkWithMystery@yahoo.com but I had that shutdown too. I'm sure sometime today I'll get an email from WorkWithMystery03.

I will play with these scammers a couple more days and then once I verify they are not on a public computer I'll shoot them over a my virus saying it's the MoneyGram money transfer info in a zipped file. They will be down quite awhile with it. Well, enough play for today, I have a business to run.

ItalianGreek

Here is the email I just responded to them:

Re: First Assignment And Payment Tracking Number

From: Not telling.com
To: workwithmystery02@yahoo.com

Dear Robin,
I understand, soon as I get the check I will cash and follow your directions. In your 1st email you said the pay would be $300 Why is it now only $200. I also referred you to Mr. Willie Layer to help with project. I think I should get some kind of bonus for reffering him. I mean, I want to help American businesses perform better by being a "Mystery Shopper" and make sure that MoneyGram is not cheating anyone who sends money using their service but, You said $300 which will help with the new hearing aid I want to purchase. Mr. Layer has not got his check yet to start his secret assignment. He is awaiting your package. We will work together since we are both elderly.

Thank you,
Mr. Neil Andbobb

I also responded to a tutor needed post on craigslist.
I was about to arrange for this person to wire me the money (or so I thought) and meet up with his child for tutoring. There were a few things that were out of sync. He made grammar mistakes common to people for whom English is a second language that were odd for someone from the UK. He also failed to respond to my questions about the exact level of tutoring his "son" needed in each subject which was wierd since he was so concerned about his son's education.
I decided I needed to talk to him. His last email had given me a phone number that I googled to find out what it would cost me to call it. Thank God it popped up in this forum or I would have kept going with it.
The phone number I got was: +44 70359 17386.
His name was supposedly Gregory Lawrence and his email address was [gregoryslaw@aol.com].

Could someone please tell me how he could scam me out of money? I'm a Chemistry major, not a finance major and don't understand how this scam works. He has my name, phone number and address, but no other identifying information.
Here is a copy of his last email:

"Good Day

How are you doing ? I will be so busy here trying to organize things here so that i can make my trip in there easily, My son is also going through medical treatment and i want to also finalize with the Nanny where he will be staying with when he arrive.

My son and the nanny will be lodging to your near by Hotel, which i would want you to get back with any good Hotel they could lodge around you and they will be there through the period of the tutoring.

I will be so please to inform you that you will get payment soon and its will be in Check or Money Order,You will cash it and send the remaining fund to his Nanny after deducting your money to tutor my son for 4wks,I hope you i still have you in that that position to assist my son.

Kindly understand the distance thing and i promise to get back to you ASAP. If you have any information for my son, You can call me on +44 70359 17386 or email instantly, I will be here to answer you .

I hope things are going all well for you in there, Calculate the total amount i will be paying for 4weeks and your days of that you will be teaching him and the charges applied for materials and other expenses for a 14yr old boy ok. His name is Gary and he is a kind and loving boy, You will love with all your heart.

Have a nice pleasant day

Mr. Gregory Lawrence"

I hope that no one else gets caught with this.

Once you agree to the arrangement, he would send you a cashier's check or money order to pay for your services. The check/money order would be for more than the agreed on amount and he would ask you to wire back the overage. Or, once you have the check deposited in your account something would "come up" on his end and he would have to back out of the deal and ask you to wire the entire amount back . . . maybe keeping a couple of hundred dollars for your trouble.

The problem comes about a week later, when your bank contacts you to tell you that the check is counterfeit and they want you to return the money.

I have also been faced with the same scam. I googled the phone number provided in the e-mail I was sent by 'Gregory Lawrence' of the U.K and was brought to this link.
Supposedly his son, 14 year old Gary, is being sent ahead of time with a Nanny. I was suppose to be getting a large check or money order that I was suppose to take my share of and give the rest to the Nanny (whose name was withheld from me.) The entire time I thought something was fishy about the whole deal. Between my first e-mail to him and the first one he sent me, 2 weeks had gone by. The ad for the tutoring position was in my local newspaper, it called for an 'in home tutor for a 14 year old boy and a 1st grade child.' None of the e-mails said anything about a 1st grade child, and that was one of my first clues that something wasn't quite right.
My local law enforcement has been notified of the situation and will be given every e-mail I was received. This will include the name, his e-mail and number he gave me.

Name: Gregory Lawrence
E-mail: gregoryslaw@aol.com
Number: +44 70359 17386

I was lucky and found this out on my own. I hope this doesn't happen to any one else.

I am very glad that you did google the phone number and that it brought you here.

Did you contact the newspaper? I know of another case where the ad was in a newspaper, and the newspaper then did an article on this scam . . . which brings more attention to it and educates people as to what is going on . . . maybe this paper would want to do the same thing. Let them know you did not become a victim because you did a search and found our site, and we would be happy to speak with them also about this scam.

I've already contacted the local law enforcement here, and they are handling everything at this point. Right now we're just waiting for the check or money order to come in. After that, it will be handed straight over to the police.
Right now, our Chief of Police is making a few phone calls to our local newspaper in hopes of finding out who placed the ad in our paper. Maybe we can catch this guy since he is currently in the process of doing his scam.
I will let Officer Ashley and any other Officer who will be placed on the case know about this website.
This place really saved me, thank you so much.
You have no idea how grateful I am that I found you in time. =)

That is the reason that my husband and I do this . . . to save others from going through what we went through when we became scam victims. We pay for all of the costs out of our own pocket, but we continue to do it so that we can help others.

Hello everyone:
I am also a tutor, and I think I have two individuals trying to scam me. I am glad I found this site.
The first person responded to my add said he is in MD and he was his son to learn spanish. He is sending his son to TX, so I can tutor him. I really thought that was odd. The son is Michael, and he will have a guardian. He wants my information, so he can send me a certified check. I do not like to give my info to anyone via e-mail, so I asked him to call me. I have not received any calls, just emails asking for my info asap. The name of the individual sending the email is Criswell Alvin, his email address is criswellalvin1960@gmail.com

The second one is the one with the 14yr old boy (shy) and the first grader. His email is new, and he has also a new name: Thomas A. Mcdonnell, the email is mcdonnell100@gmail.com. He claims to be in UK, and his phone is +44 70359 17386.

Experienced Tutor needed: I am seeking a tutor for a 14 yr old boy (well behaved. shy) and a home schooling 1st grader. Instruction will take place in my home three days a week, hours are flexible, to begin between 8 am -8 PM and lessons should last about 60 min. Subjects: Math, Science, reading, English. Interested please reply by email "mcdonnell100@gmail.com". $45 per hour

I thought he was fake because his add talked about two kids. However, when he sent the details, he said he only had one child, and his wife was dead. Yet, he want to send his only kid to US, so he can learn English and Math. In my opinion: fishy!.

My question is: What should I do next? I am still in contact with these two individuals because they both want my address bad, so they can send my their fake money!!

I would cut off contact with these people now and do not give them any more info. Also, report them to the place where they posted the ad.
