 Post subject: Warranty Scam
PostPosted: Tue Aug 12, 2003 10:25 am
How could I have been so [/b]stupid?? I got a postcard in the mail from a company in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, saying IMPORTANT VEHICLE WARRANTY INFORMATION. So I called the "Toll Free" number on the back and they offered me a warranty package deal to last 'til 2008. It sounded vital, so I gave them a credit-card number for it (!). When I told my mom about it, she said since it wasn't from my dealer here in town, I'd been scammed, and that I should have talked with her first. Then I called the "Warranty" company back, and asked to be taken off the list, and that I felt that I been scammed. Of course, the A-hole on the line read me the riot act, but they said they'd do it anyway. My mom says not to worry, that I should just watch my next credit-card statement for any unusual outstanding charges, but I feel like such a moron. I should have seen this was an obvious scam for my cash!

It's not as obvious as you think, and there's no need to beat yourself up over it. It's possible that the company that contacted you may actually sell 'warranties,' albeit overpriced and unnecesary warranties.

One additional step I recommend is to contact your credit card issuer and request that they cancel your current card and reissue a new card with a new number. That way, if your card has been compromised, it can't be used. And if you have any unauthorized charges on the card now, find out what your card issuer requires from you to file a dispute of the charges.
