My father who is 71, received a call this past Wednesday from someone claiming to be his grandson (on of my sister's kids)

The person told him he had gone to Canada with some friends to a concert, and one of them had been caught with drugs, so the police threw all of them in jail. He claimed he called my dad because he was scared to call his father. He said his bail was $6,000. My father went to the bank and took out the 6 grand and transferred it via western union to the address given.

I'm still finding out details, but this morning I received a call from my sister wanting to know if my dad was "ok". He had brain surgery a few months ago to remove a cancerous tumor, and she was distressed that suddenly he is calling telling her this irrational story about her son being trapped in a Canadian jail.

I started the ball rolling and called a few people, including someone at the bank who looked at it. As of this morning, when they locked his account, he had sent out just under $25,000 to various names at various addresses in the UK and Spain. He saved all the receipts and information, we had a detective over and they made copies of everything and have a case open on it now.

I'm just floored, and have no idea what else to do.. Wells Fargo said he (my dad) voided his account's fraud protection because the person conducting the fraud did not directly remove the funds.
Aside from the police report, what else can we do?

WOW . . . I am so sorry to hear that this is happening to your family.

The first scam you detailed out is called the Grandparent Scam. http://scamvictimsunited.wordpress.com/ ... ent-scams/

I do know that some people in Minnesota are working to have some laws passed to protect people from some of these scams. If it is passed in Minnesota the hope is that other states will follow. I know that it may not help you or your family recover any money, but I would encourage you to contact them and tell them your story. The more they hear about how these scams hurt real people, the better the chances are that they will fight harder to pass these laws.

Here are their names and links to their sites with their contact info
Representative Joe Hoppe

Representative Joe Atkins
