Okay my cousin has cancer and has been going through a lot of things, financially especially. So she has been praying and she is very vulnerable and pretty much believes anything, however I am more skeptical.

She was contacted by someone claiming that Wal-Mart was giving away about 10 million dollars. The call originated from Canada. They told her they were drawing 10 names for winners that they were giving money away to just for shopping there. They said they drew her name as a winner for 125,000 dollars. Then they sent her a check for 4,000 dollars saying it was to cover the taxes for the winnings.... This just happened so we don't know what else they may have in store or what might happen next but has anyone else heard of this and what should I tell her to do?

As far as I know Wal-mart isn't based out of Canada and they also said that it went to people who shopped at both K-Mart and Wal-mart within the last six months. As far as I know Wal-mart and K-mart are not affliaiated in any way....

The check came from some clearing house in Canada.

Can anyone help me figure this one out? Not sure if it's a scam but it sounds fishy to me, especially since there were no entry's into anything through Wal-mart.

Unfortunately, the email you have posted here is a scam. Some of the major red flags include the fact that legitimate lotteries do not notify winners by email. It is impossible to win a lottery without first buying a ticket, as that is how lotteries fund their prizes. There is no such thing as an international lottery. The complexity of gaming/gambling laws from country to country prevents such a thing. You should also note that it is illegal in most countries for a lottery to charge fees before releasing a prize.
