Lately I've seen more and more cases of people getting ripped off (or almost ripped off) on online sales web sites. I don't mean eBay (which is a great place to get ripped, BTW), or Alibaba, or even Craigslist. I mean free-shipping-list.com, datelmobilephones.net, and their likings. These are the online equivalent of midtown Manhattan electronics shops. They sell everything cheaply, just buy it today. On the internet, many times, there IS NO store, Neo...

Dead Giveaway #1 - The looks
Same as you wouldn't buy a cellphone (or digital camera) from the back of a truck, you shouldn't buy one from a shop that looks like the behind of a truck. The site should look respectable; at least as respectable as a shop you'd buy from.
Flash animation in poor taste? Low resolution pictures? Plenty of dead links? Let others buy there.

Dead Giveaway #2 - Can you contact them?
No 'real life' contact details? No deal! No, being able to write on an online form is NOT considered real life contact details. RLCD are: phone number you can call, where someone answers; real world shop you can visit, or whose existance you can verify.
You can mail them? Fine! use Readnotify.com on them, and check that the shops location and readers location is the same. If the seller is in Romania, Nigeria or anywhere in former USSR, run away.

Dead Giveaway #3 - Special price only for you, my friend...
Same as in real life, the sentence above, unless you're Ms. Schieffer in a bikini, should light the 'Is he trying to rip me off?' warning. Prices can't be THAT low, no matter WHERE the product is sold from, in these times of globalization.
They offer to pay for shipment? Be suspicious. Shipment is usually pretty expensive. Cheap products AND free shipment? hmm...
They say that the usually sell only the double amount? (e.g. you inquire about 10, and they say 'we normally sell a minimum of 20, but since I'm in a good mood today I'll let you have 10') Say 'thanks', and move on; It's the notorious 'double or nothing scam'

Dead Giveaway #4 - When do they exist since? Who's behind it?
The site says 1999-2005. They must be old, hence respectable, right? Wrong. Deadly wrong. Go to DNSSTUFF.com, and on the 1st column do a WHOIS lookup. This checks up the actualy registrar of the internet. If THAT says 2005, they exist (in their current form) since 2005.
If the contact details on this page are fake (unreachable phone numbers, etc), you should also run away.

Dead Giveaway #5 - WU
If the site only allows Western Union payments (or moneygram), and even if they allow only bank transfers, it's probably a fake.
An honest shop allows credit card transactions, or even letters of credit for large transactions.

Dead Giveaway #6 - Google it up, Scottie
Go to google.com, and google the domain name together with the word 'scam'. Any relevant results? Draw you conclusions.

Use Common Sense
A great deal today, will probably be there tomorrow (or next week) as well. Take a few days, ask around, and you'll probably get some more insights about how legit the sites are.
For every person that got a Nokia N90 for 50$, there are countless that remain without their phone AND without their money. What would you rather lose? The opportunity, or your money?
If you think a site is a scam - report it in a few forums, so next time it does show on google.

Oh, and feel free to msg me if you think I can help you.

hey man, that was hugely useful. I'm reasonably new to the game, but have had several near misses where I've been grateful I did some homework. I duno how much time you have, but I'm trying to check out this place http://www.hyperhardwaresl.com/ There a lot that makes me think they're ok, but just enough other things to make me hesitant.
If you could give me a pointer that'd be greatly appreciated, thanks!

so has anyone received a package from this company? I opened a fraud claim with Western Union right now and I'm hoping to hear something very soon here. Haven't heard from the guy that I made the purchase from in a while... I'm already heated at myself about the whole situation.

I also tried to buy a phone from this guy. It is 3 weeks later and I am still without a phone. I thought I was being careful and as turns out I was just not careful enough. as you can see in the e-mails below they are supposed to send me my money back but I highly doubt they will since I am not the only one who has had this happen to. I just tried to get on their site and it is down. So I assume they know people are on to them. I have called them out on several occasions via e-mail but they did not admit to anything. So if you are reading this. do not go through this Co. Learn from my mistake and just buy it from someone who allowes you to you a method that can be tracked.

Dear Frank Wiek,
Thank you for your purchase. After verifying the trustworthiness of the seller and the availability of the merchandise for immediate shipping, we have approved your transaction and offered you, as the buyer, full purchase protection for the amount you agreed on with the seller. When you accepted this transaction, be assured that the member is a qualified seller and you can feel assured that your transaction will go smoothly and that you are dealing with one who has consistently meet the requirements established by eBay.
Complete your eBay transaction in 3 easy steps:
1. eBay accepts the transaction and offers purchase protection to the buyer (if the transaction is declined, no further action is required from either the buyer or the seller);
2. The buyer sends payment and the seller receives it. After the payment is received, the seller must notify eBay. Buyer will send the payment details directly to the seller's e-mail address. The seller has three business days to send the tracking number of the shipment to the buyer and to eBay. If no tracking number is provided, a full refund is immediately sent to the buyer;
3. Buyer receives the merchandise and has ten days to inspect it. If it is complete and as described, the buyer should accept the merchandise. If he refuses the merchandise, the buyer must ship the merchandise back to the seller within three business days. After the inspection period is over, the buyer must contact ebay with the result of the inspection.

We know that we learn every eBay member to use services such as PayPal, Escrow which are safer than Western Union Money Transfer. But is our responsibility to make every option safe and tell that this seller is verified by our services and you can have all the trust in his requests.
Payment instructions:
To submit the payment with Western Union Money Transfer, you have 2 options:

2. If you are now in the USA and need to use a credit/debit card (Visa or MasterCard), call 1-800-CALL-CASH and make the payment to the verified name of the seller. An additional fee will be charged on most cards because this transaction will be considered a cash advance on your card.
Western Union Money Transfer is the only service that has ultimate authentication of the identity of the receiver of funds. Several IDs and utility bills are required before the funds are paid. Therefore, no one else but your seller can pick up the money. Your payments cannot be lost in the mail, like money orders or checks.
Western Union Money Transfer is designed mainly for sending cash to friends and family in need, so telling them you are sending the money to an eBay seller will prevent your money transfer to go through and you will be unable to complete this transaction.

Our seller uses Western Union Service for the payment due the fact is not able to temporarly use: PayPal,Escrow, Credit Card as a method of payment.

Pay using Money order online via Western Union Auction Payments in association with eBay Inc .

Currently, this seller has a US $20,000.00 deposit in an eBay managed purchase protection account.
Transactions with this eBay seller are covered by purchase protection against fraud and description errors. For your safety, this account was locked today, for 90 days time period. The seller is unable to withdraw any money from it, within this period...
Should you need a refund for this transaction, the insured amount will be taken from the seller's purchase protection account and sent to you. The refund is sent to your bank account, or by check or money order. The way you are refunded is at your choice. You have 90 days from the above verification date to request a refund. Refund requests are processed within 3 days.

Conditions to be meet before you may ask for a refund:
Here are the situations suitable for a refund request:
1. If the item doesn't arrive and/or the seller stops communications after the payment was received;
