Post subject:  Replied to a phishing email

I had a post for items for sale on line. I received a response asking for pictures, which I sent. I received a reply that they wanted it, and offered to pay with a cashiers check. All very benign so far. I replied with my address and phone number to finalize the deal. That is when I received the email requesting that they send a cashires check with more than the amount and that I give the difference to the person picking it up. I refused and said that I can idenitfy a scam when I see it. I am concerned though because they have my address and phone number. The emails were coming from "stevetheboss <steven_mica@yahoo.com". I reported it on US-CERT.gov. Any other suggestions?

You could report them for email abuse. Just forward the emails to abuse@ what ever service they were using, and let them know that the email account is being used for criminal/fraud activity. The company may close the account.

Yes, this will not totally stop them, but it could slow them down. Any contacts that they already had going with this account will not get through and because of this you might save someone else from becoming a victim.

If you opened email by these people and replied to them, you also need to do a deep virus scan on your system and make sure you scan for spyware and malware as well as trojans. They have been embedding viruses in the subject lines lately to bypass the scan on the body of the emails.
