Is there a list of all of the fake banks and such on this site?? It would make it alot easier to just look at one of the tabs, and see if the banking institution is real or not. I just got one a few minnutes ago from some place called Commercial Federal Bank Online.. They want me to send them a bunch of personal information or they will terminate my account.. As far as I know... I have never heard of them before.. Has anyone else?? Thanks.. Al |

If you go to http://www.419legal.org you will find a listing of real banks or try http://www.aa419.org where they work to shut down fraudulent banks. These sites are your best bet in finding the information you are requesting. The email you received is probably just a way for scammers to get your information especially since you haven't had an account with this institution. |

Al this is called phishing and there is a real bank of that name- see http://www.millersmiles.co.uk/report/1202 If you send out 1million e-mails to random people, hopefully some will have an account with that bank. And then the phisher hopes that some are stupid enough to provide their personal details which can then be used for all sorts of purposes. Targets of this type of scam in the past and recently have been banks such as: Citi Bank Bank Of America Suntrust Washinton Mutual Waichovia Though the bank names are real the url that you are lead to is to a fake site that has been a duplicate copy of the real site. The url usually will not be a secured site, and may include a series of numbers, characters etc in the url. Ebay and paypal have also been the subject of such a scam, anyone who has a site out there for their bank or payment service or a service that houses personal and private information is a target either right now or in the future. The ploy is to get the intended victim in a panic mode over losing access to their account and money, while in this panic mode the victim reacts with complying with the demand for login information or account information instantly. The reason that it works so well with the paypal one is that anyone who uses paypal knows that they will freeze your account and your money on a second's notice without warning and will keep your money tied up for up to 120 days per investigation. Paypal brings fear on to the users all on their own and the scammers know this and use it to their advantage. |
