I am trying to sell my laptop. I used the popular classifieds website craigslist as my medium. Ive gotten over 40 emails concerning the laptop but i was able to weed about 35 of them out for being scams or just not trustworthy.

I have 2 options. I am trying to sell the laptop for 500.

I have a buyer who goes to my school who will buy it for 350, i asked if he could raise it to 425, if so i will probably go with him for safety.

Then there is this buyer who seems legit. First asked me the condition of the laptop in detail, i gave her a full page summary of the condition. Then she asked me for my full name and address and used bidpay.com service to star the process of mailing me a check for 600 dollars. (I recieve a confirmation email from orderdirect@deliveryman.com, is this even the bidpay website?, with my full name, address, and amount of 600 dollars). She now wants me to go to Fedex and weight the laptop and all the goodies i offer with it so using her fedex account i can ship it for free. She called me on my cell using internet to voice service, basically a guy reads what she types and he types what i say, we had a 25 minute conversation about the deal. Once i send pidpay.com the fedex package tracking number and it reached the buyer they will mail me the check.

So... i am at loss now, 3 other buyers offered me 100 dollars more using a similiar service like http://www.alertpay.com or cashiers check or via EMS of USPS (what does this mean?). Anyways what do you think i should do?

I think im gonna have to relist my item and this time say that i want Locals ONLY that i can meet in person. This worked well when i sold my x-box. Or someone who lives close by and send by means of C.O.D.

Please any experienced sellers/buyers tell me your safe methods of transaction.

Thank you

They're all scams, I'm afraid. What address have you been given to send the laptop to - somewhere in Nigeria, perhaps? Have you checked the email headers from the emails you have, to see where they originate from? Sell the laptop locally, for cash.

Dealing locally is the safest method.

I see, yea i concluded this myself earlier since after i posted my situation i read the post under mine and found it was exactly the same situation. I emailed the person and told them to forget about the transaction.

Now.. how can i sell this locally? What methods of advertising should i look into? Newspaper? Nothing Online? And thanks again for reinsuring me that it was indeed a scam. :)

Cash in hand in person is the best way to sell things. It is sad that we have this great tool (the internet) that could be used to reach even more people with advertisments, but the problem is that you also attract the scammers that way too.

You can use Craigslist (just be sure to put "local only" in you ad).
You can post notes on the boards at local grocery stores, colleges etc.
You can let people know at your job/school/church.
You can have a yard sale.
