Sorry to say, that once the wire transfer is picked up the money is gone and there is nothing that can be done to get it back.

Why would the Postal Service refund your money? The had nothing to do with the money order you were sent. Where did you cash the money order?

* Thank you for this string and everyone that took the time to report-- it is our only defense.

Before I report my Craigslist scammer to Craigslist staff... I am following through with the scam and waiting for the FedEx package [the box I'm to ship my laptop in] and than I am going to ship just the paper printouts of this and other sites exposing these bastard, back to them! Atleast they'll pay a bit for their ignorance!

Cheers.

I really wish that you would not do this . . . ours, and other sites that fight scams, have come under "attack" by the scammers . . . if you send them print outs of ours and other site I am concerned that the scammers might then take it out by launching additional attacks on the sites trying to do some good.

Send them your junk mail instead.

I agree. 419eater was shut down for several days due to a huge spammer attack on their site. Admin does not need the additional hassel of cleaning everything up that comes with that. Plus if they launch an attack on this site or other sites then other people do not have the resources to help identify a scam and may become a victim rather than avoid the loss of product and/or money. If you want to send the scammer something send them a pile of dog dung in their box just wrap it up good so it doesn't stink.

There are a couple of ways the shipping thing works.

1) They ship the item to the address they gave you and then a person at that address reships it to the scammer. Usually these people are being scammed as well and end up paying for all the shipping and are told they will get paid back for it (never happens). From what I can tell these people are usually suckered in by a romance scam.

2) They have the shipment redirected to a different address after you send out the merchandise.

Just remember they will have your home address, name, etc. so be careful if you plan on sending them a bag of POO or something like that. I would just cut ties and be grateful you did not get scammed.

Well, it looks as though I can jump onto the "scammed welcome wagon" as well... *shakes head* There is another name out there that needs to be looked after. She caught up with my on Craig's List. It is our very first time selling anything through the internet and boy did we just learn our lesson hard core. We didn't even think about it being a potential scam, until we went to the desired location and the postal lady basically refused to send out our package because of its
destination, which just happened to be Nigeria.

Her name is Catlin Edilson.

I was offering, and still am, thankfully a really good computer package. The first e-mail we get is: "Hope its in good condition?" So, naturally we responded.

Next message we receive: "How are you doing? I will like to let you know that I have gone
through your postinmg and very satisfied with it, I am willing to buy
it as far as I will not be making any repairs on it.I am buying it for
my ex-neighbor's daugther who lost both her father and mother during a
motor accident when going to work couply of weeks ago as a gift which
she also need for her final year project. So I will be buying it with
an offer of $1,200 for packaging. Because I will not be able to come
over there to pick it up myself due to the nature of my job and also
the distance,I reside in Columbus, OH.
I will like to send the money through United States Express
payment(Standard Delivery Service) which the money Order will be
delivered in 1-2days latest So to proceed with the payment I will
like to have your full name , street address , City , State , Zip-Code , private email address
so that it can be forwarded for payment today and also includie your phone number , so that you can be contacted by United State Postal Service(USPS) so that the money could be delivered latest tomorrow after all arrangement.
I will also like to let you know that I have a fedex prepaid account
which will take care of the shipping cost,so you will not have to pay
for shipping once payment is made.
Thanks for your understanding and please note that it is needed
urgently so I will like to hear from you soon
Regards ..." And of course, we took the bait.

Then we are sent this now very familiar e-mail: " I have just gotten an approval email notification from( United State Post Service) that my payment for your item has been approved so all you got to do now is to get the package ready for shipping, i will be sending you a fed-ex pre-paid shipping label which you will affix the package before you drop it off at a FedEx location but before that,i will like to know the weight of the package in the lbs so that i can forward the shipping label to you and also for you to copy the tracking number on the label and send it to their customer care department for verification.

I will be waiting to hear from you soonest. Please ensure that its packaged properly cause i have to pay an extra fee to USPS for them to process my payment fast.
Thanks
so pls check your junk mail and get back to me asap" So, now we're excited! Yay, we're making a sale, and it's $200.00 more than what we were asking for.

Next we received the kicker: "Congratulations! United States Postal Service has received your email address from "Catlin Edilson" to inform you of the order to have a$1,200.00 United States Postal Service® branded Postal OrderSM sent to you for the following item ''GREAT Computer Package With Extra Goodies" has been processed and APPROVED:
The financial details of the transaction are stated below:

Your money order is being approved and will be completed once we have receive shipping tracking for shipment verification and authorized your method of payment
What's Next? When you ship out Merchandise, you will receive a Confirmation email from which you can track the money order, This measure is taken in order to protect both seller and buyer interests and to reduce the occurrence of fraudulent activities.

You got lucky that the postal lady said something. Some people don't get that lucky.

Its a mutli-billion dollar business folks and they are very very good at it...

(1) Craigslist was designed as a face-to-face sales option....don't forget that

(2) Never use Western Union unless you know the receiving party...

(3) Your bank is part of the problem....they are very uneducated about Money Order scams, or any scam at all actually.....once you deposit anything that turns out to be altered or fruadulant, you BECOME part of criminal activity.

(4) Watch for "washed" MoneyGrams...that means altered. The 800 phone number will not be on the back of the MoneyGram as it is supposed to be and any color other than the original gray on the front, especially where the dollar amount is, is an immediate Red Flag to alterations

(5) USE Google....check the return address, check the person you're being asked to forward EXTRA funds to

(6) If you receive a MoneyGram that you suspect may not be real....call MoneyGram, they are very happy to have you give them the serial number/numbers and they will tell you the actual value they were purchased for.....

(7) Be Smart....

Payment options that are currently safe, besides CASH.... :!:

PayPal...Bank Cashiers Checks drawn only on banks that you are familiar with and can be verified via a phone call, and Money Orders purchased over-the-counter from the US Postal Service

Not really . . . we were hit with a cashier's check, from a major bank that most people have heard of

And our bank told us that it had cleared, and when I asked if there was any way that this could come back and bite us in the butt they assured me there was no way . . . they were wrong.

There needs to be more education about these scams . . . to the public and to the people in the banking industry.

You missed the important part, that being the simple phone call, and trusted 2 different people at your bank that didn't know what they were talking about...

Don't trust your own bank for any reason....

They are full is misinformation and its not their job to make calls to see if checks, cashiers checks or money order are valid

As you learned later, a phone call to the bank that issued the CC would have prevented you getting scammed out of $8800 bucks.

I always say that my biggest mistake was trusting that the people at the bank were giving me accurate information. Call me crazy for thinking that people who work in a bank, and see cashier's checks all day, would know the correct information about them and the clearing process.

With all due respect Shawn....that wasn't your biggest mistake IMO

Not checking the validity of the cashiers check yourself when you received it was an important mistake...

You say it was on a well recognized bank...why did you not take it to a branch of that bank
and cash it or at least have it checked....???

And....if anyone thinks the local police, FBI, Secret Service, your bank or anyone else will be of much assistance....forget it

They have much more important things to do than chase scammers around...its very low priority to them
