I would like to launch an international campaign to make email providers indicate the origin of the email in each email they deliver to users.
This would not be very difficult, but could save billions.
See for example the following site where you can trace the email you received:
http://www.ipligence.com/emailtrace/
It provides simple and clear information on the country from which the mail was sent.
Wouldn't it be great to have such a service included in each email account?
Please support this idea.

Attention: Internet fraud
I found out that my name was being used by scammers to defraud people.
If you receive any unsolicited emails in my name, please do not reply it. You could post it here to help other victims protect themselves.
For more information, please visit my website:

Thank you.

Do you have an organization that you are working with? Have you already started something for this campaign that we can join in with? Please, give us some more information and we can see what we can do to help.

Many thanks for offering to help. I believe that your support will be valuable.

I have just launched this project. I started to send emails to some email providers to explain my idea, and I hope to convince some of them - at least - that this solution can be useful. If a few providers accept to try it, I am sure that others will follow.

So I will post a model of the email on this page, and I would suggest that the other members of the forum adapt it and send it to their email provider (and also to their friends and family members, asking them to do the same). The higher the pressure, the more chance we have to succeed.

I am working individually, and have no organization. If scamvictimsunited can help, this would be surely an appropriate organization. You could, for instance, circulate an email to members of your forum, and invite them to support the initiative. They can also suggest other models for letters to be sent to email providers.

Later on, we can even consider to ask lawmakers to issue binding legislation in this regard (we are just asking to indicate the country of origin of each email: individual privacy will not suffer from this).

Any other idea would also be greatly appreciated.

I will post all additional information first here, and later on my own website: KeghamTamamian.com

Thank you again

Here is a model for a message that I invite everyone to use. Please copy it and send it to your email provider. You might also consider circulating it to your friends for the same purpose.
Many thanks.

Dear Madam or Sir,

My name is -//---name---// - and I have been using your services for several years. I am writing to you to request your help in preventing scams, as I recently faced serious problems because of an Internet scam.

I wonder if it would be possible for you to add to your email interface a button to show the country of origin of each email delivered to your users.

Many scams would be aborted if the victims can see automatically in an email, purportedly sent from Mr. Investigator in France or Mr Bank Manager in the UK, that it was in fact sent from China or Nigeria or another country far from France or from the UK.

This solution already exists. See for example the following website that traces any email received. It indicates clearly the country from which the mail was sent (is shows a small flag and the name of the country): http://www.ipligence.com/emailtrace/

There are also a few sofwares who provide the same functions.

It be great to have such service included in all your -//put the website's name// - email accounts. This would protect innocent victims, and would also prevent many identity thefts. If the victims have the chance to notice the origin of the scam emails, they would probably avoid falling in the trap. I know that tracing emails would not be possible in every case, but I believe that any number of traced scam emails would still be a very positive contribution to fighting scam on Internet.

This would also be a great advantage for -//put the website's name// - since it will provide not only fast and reliable service, but also a service that can actively help fighting fraud.

Thank you.

-//your name// -

1) Would you mind if I blog about this topic? I could then post the info that you have provided on my blog.
2) Are you on Facebook or any of the other social networking sites? We have a Facebook group, a MySpace page and a YouTube page . . . joining those would be a great way to spread the word about this to others.
3) Are you a "tech" person and that is how you came up with this idea?
4) Have you thought of going to the media with this idea to help the encourage internet providers to join in, or have you contacted the AG's office or any national groups to try and get them to support this campaign? (I have several media and government contacts if you would like to work together on this)

Hi,
Thanks for your ideas. They are extremely practical. Yes, I would greatly appreciate if you could blog this and collect a maximum of comments. I am not myself a “tech” person, and I have only basic knowledge of Internet. But, still, I wish to see on my (and each) email interface a small button telling the presumable origin of the email. It is like when I receive a letter: the stamp shows where it was sent from. So it could be something similar for the emails, like a button saying “presumably from: USA – (with a small US flag next to it)” or “presumably from: China – (with a small Chinese flag next to it)”. I know that this will not guarantee the origin of the email: when a scammer uses an anonymiser, or any special proxy, he/she can hide his place. But I suppose that this “origin button” will make their life more difficult. My guess is that once the scammer sends his millions of spam emails through proxy, he might be sometimes less careful during the follow up communications with his victims – when exchanging emails with the unsuspected victims who are on the way to fall in the trap. And in such cases, this button will be of a valuable help (e.g. the pretended Spanish Lottery Company writing once from Nigeria !)
I believe that this solution is worthy to be implemented 8) .
So if you could blog this and have a feedback from others, and also from real “tech” persons, this would be great. May be they can have even better suggestions about the technical aspects of this idea. Also, please consider this idea as an open idea, and carry it as far as you wish. This is for the benefit of everyone. I am not in a position to talk to the media (I live in France, and have a huge load of work), so if the scamvictimsunited community would like to “adopt” the idea and make it happen, I would be more than glad. Alone, I might not succeed at all, and if I do, this might take months. But all together – there is much more strength ! (as you say on your website) Again, do as you wish, contact whomever you want, and many thanks :P .
Kegham Tamamian
P.S. I will soon join your community groups on Internet.

Great news! :D
The email provider, http://www.gmx.com, has launched a userlab where users are encouraged to submit ideas and vote for the ones they wish to see implemented.
This could be an excellent opportunity to ask them to provide this "origin of the email" service.
I have just sumbitted this idea to their lab, under the title: help detecting scam and fraud.
Please vote for it on their webpage: http://www.gmx.com/service/labs.html
Thank you.
