If you or someone you care about believes you may be the victim of a scam (particularly a romance scam), please remember that US Embassies and Consulates are excellent resources for finding out whether or not your Internet pal is really a stranded American in distress or the heir to an undisclosed gold mine. An email or phone call to the American Citizens Services office can result in a Consular Officer checking US passport records, confirming that a hotel/hospital/police station does (or does NOT) exist, and explaining that the "Basic Travel Allowance" is as fictional as the Twilight Saga.

As an officer in a West Africa-based US Consulate, I talk to too many victims of scams - 15 to 20 per day - and often wish I had a way to warn more people before they lose their hearts and their money. Please reach out to us if you need us - www.travel.state.gov.

We should look at ways that our group could work with you to warn people and educate them on scams.

Shawn - that is an excellent idea. Please feel free to email me off-line and we can discuss further. Cheers!

I totally agree with this! I just became a new traveler and applied and received my passport so I had the chance to really read thru that site and found alot of the imformation very useful... it's good to have somewhere to go when help of this kind may be needed.

The US embassy can only help you before you lost money, it looks like no body can help you after you lost money. Every body told me to forget the scammer (scammed a lot of my money), just move on. I even pointed out which building the scammer is in, but now one wanst to go there to catch them/him. Some friends even told me, in Nigeria, poeple may think the scammer as a model citizen there because he scammed my money. He increase income for himself and his country!
