I'm in the process of trying to rent my basement and had a series of emails back and forth with "Melissa". In a nutshell, she's from France living in Australia with her uncle b/c her parents are dead. Works as a nurse and is looking to secure a job once she moves in, but not to worry her uncle is going to pay the rent until she finds a job.

This was my first exposure to this scam so the questions she asked seemed reasonable (describe the basement, house, pets, work, etc) so I didn't think anything of it. Looking back I feel like such a complete tool b/c I'm usually a lot better in catching these things early.

I gave her my address so "she" could send the check, then I found this site (thank god). Emailed back letting them know not to send anything, that I'm contacting the authorities and filing a fraud attempt file, and will be monitoring my credit reports.

Good for you! Could you also post the email address that "Melissa" was using on this site? Sometimes others will do a google search on that info and then they will find your post.

Funny thing, they emailed me today to tell me the check is on the way. I'll turn it directly over to the appropriate authorities.
