Better yet, just always go through a real estate agency.
Much safer.

Looks like the story made the news!

Stung for $1000 in lettings scamEllie Harvey
July 23, 2009
AN ONLINE scam in which prospective tenants are asked to transfer money to an overseas bank account in return for keys to a rental property has prompted a security crackdown on real estate websites.

Some victims have posted their experiences in a forum on the website ScamVictimsUnited .com. Most say when they inquired about the apartment, they received an email explaining the owner was in Italy for three years and that was why the apartment was being offered for rent.

"I'm the owner of the apartment and it looks exactly like in the pictures," the email says. "The rent for 1 month is AUD $1000 including all utilities (water, electricity, internet, cable, parking) You can move in the apartment in the same day you receive the keys. I must inform you that the keys from the apartment are with me and I hope that we will find a way to make this happen. Thanks."

Users are then directed to make a transaction through Western Union, with the promise that TNT will courier keys to them.

Domain.com.au, which is owned by Fairfax Media, has temporarily suspended private ads pending a review of the situation. The general manager of key categories, Tony Blamey, said the company received reports of the scam in the past two weeks. He said the website immediately removed the ads and tried to contact anyone who might have been at risk.

Two complaints have been made to Fairfax Media about the ads, however Mr Blamey was unsure how many had been placed. Existing ads have all been screened and no new private ads are being placed.

"The key message from us is that consumers need to understand that they should approach the internet like any other transaction: they need to be careful of who they're dealing with," Mr Blamey said.

Security has also been upgraded on the site and more warnings have been added. Mr Blamey advised people to inspect the property where possible, or to send a friend.

One user, "ivtendean", almost fell victim to the scammer. The user said it seemed too cheap and the fear was confirmed when it was discovered the Melbourne address did not exist.

HELLO!
well i was bored and decided to string the person along :)
for the most part i simply copied sections in this forum and replaced certain words.
my scammer was called Marianne Paterson

it was fun and i'm glad to say that by wasting this scammer's time it saved one innocent person from falling for their trap.
so i suggest others do the same.

in australia recently, it has finally! been banned to make private listings on domain.com so hopefully this scamming will stop in here for a while :)

Good o' for making the papers! (But how small, and how far in was the article, I wonder...)
Alas, Domain.com.au appears to be an open market once more...
And they didn't take the advice of making 'phone contact details compulsory'... *sigh*
Bloody Milano lady/man...

Letssssssss just all be a bit careful with this/these one/s, just in case...

"Dangerous Business
In June of 1995, an American was murdered in Lagos, Nigeria, while pursuing a 4-1-9 scam, and numerous other foreign nationals have been reported as missing. Victims are often convinced of the authenticity of Advance Fee Fraud schemes by the forged or false documents bearing apparently official Nigerian government letterhead, seals, as well as false letters of credit, payment schedules and bank drafts."

Hi All,

I am Rebecca Joanne Gutterson and I had a copy of my passport taken for a scam and it is now being used for this. I can guarentee it is not me taking your money and I happy to speak to the police with any of you although they have already been informed and the people are overseas.

I apologies for all the harm this is doing but there is nothing that I can do they are just sending around my passport. They also have other people's passports and if you have sent them yours they will be using them too.

Please feel free to email me.

Rebecca

Rebecca,
You have become the victim of Identity Theft . . . the scammers are using your identity to fool others . . . you may want to check out the information here.

http://www.scamvictimsunited.com/identity_theft.htm

I think that the victims of this scam understand that you are not "the bad guy" in this situation. You are a victim also. It is the people that are using your name to hide behind that are the ones that people are upset with.

Thank you,

I have some more info they are also using the name Elizabeth Joy Thomas on a NSW drivers license.

My passport is about to be reissued but it doesn't expire till 2015 so I guess they will be using it till then.

Can I ask . . . how did you first come to find out that your name/passport was being used in these scams? I have heard stories of some people doing a google search on their own name just to see what comes up and that is when they found their name posted on scam sites and put the whole thing together.

Hey guys im from Perth Australia, caught my self a scam from fake name Melanie Hopkins in London UK.
I got to the last email where i would send my money and wait for my keys and contract.
Lucky i know a thing or two with computers.
got the last email which looked like it was from TNT with my name and address and info about the package allready in there hands 1hour after i sent the email.. wtf?
i thought wow. ok cool... while reading and looking at these details i thought wow why are these pictures the same as i seen on Ebay. i highlighted my mouse over one of the pictures and the detailed line said, Example of Fedex Ground, Property of Ebay Motors and Westen Union picture with low Res. ok i thought, what a total amateur!!!

Should i reply and say the money has been sent and is on its way and have someone catch this scammer?
is it possible? have you sent money to a address and have it gone missing and not get it back?
no i did not send any money to this fake douche bag but bad luck to those who have.. i really want to hurt this guy with a passion, i would group up with 100 people behind me dressed with TNT suits saying.. hi here's your 2000$ HA! BOOOM !!!

Just so you know, what you are doing is called Scam Baiting, and if you wnat to learn to do it safe I would go to 419eater.com

I am sorry to say that there is no way to catch these scammers, since most of them are overseas. I would have to be the governement and law enforcement in THAT country that would have to do something about the fraud, and they turn a blind eye to the problem. With money wiring, if the scammer has the right info, even if you have said that the pick up is in New York, they could really pick it up at any location in any country in the world.

I got the exact same message with the same steps requiring me to pay through Western Union. They sent me a TNT confirmation e-mail with this contact at the bottom: tnt-customer-support@deliveryman.com. Then I wondered why TNT's e-mail addresses would end with deliveryman and I came across this forum. Gosh, I'm so relieved I didn't make the payment, I was just going to. My receiver's name was Nicole Selmer and she was offering a really cheap place in Adelaide. And she didn't respond to my want of the exact address, despite me asking her three times. Anyway, thanks for making this public. And I think Real Estate and Domain should enforce proof when approving a listing on their sites.

I think you should tell them this . . . tell them that you will take your business some place else if they are not going to help protect you.

Obviously we need a way to complete this deal that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are after. I have found a way for us to complete the deal safe and fast, and in this way you will receive the Keys in less than 2 days, if you move fast as well. The solution is provided by a company called TNT which is similar to Fedex, DHL or UPS, which will handle the payment and delivery of the Keys.I have found a procedure that will allow us to make a fast and safe deal and through this way you will see it and decide if you will stay in the apt or not before I receive my payment. Please click on the link bellow to the TNT website to see how we can complete the deal safely and fast directly from the website of the company where the procedure is explained:http://www.tnt.com/express/en_gb/site/home/services.htmlLet me know if you are interested please because I really need to take care of this matter by the end of the next week.Regards,

Hello from Sydney, Australia!

I was searching for an apartment to rent on domain.com.au (legit site by the way) when I came across this absolutely gorgeous place in the city at an unbelievably low price! I mean wow! I had a feeling that the ad was too good to be true, but emailed the agent anyway. I received a response from the 'owner' of the apartment within a day. The apartment owner stated that she would be in Milan for 3 years for work, and that she would have to find some way to deliver the keys to me for inspection. At that point alarm bells started to ring in my head! However, being the mischievous soul that I am, I decided to have a little fun. Here is the exchange:

Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for your reply. I am very interested in the place. Can you tell me a bit more about it, ie. which building it is in, etc? Unfortunately I can't seem to find the listing on domain.com.au anymore. Can you please forward me the link? Thank you.

Note how in the last email 'she' uses her position as Executive Personal Recruitment Officer at Gianfranco Ferre as her signature! Gianfranco Ferre is a fashion company, and I highly doubt that they have an Executive Personal Recruitment division! I have to admit, I was taken in by the opportunity to get this wonderful apartment, at least until I read that third email. She even included pictures in her third email to entice me to continue with the exchange. However, by then I was 100% certain that this was a scam. Warning signs: Urgency (Act Fast!), 100% email exchange, person overseas, oh my!

Hi Elizabeth,

I would be happy to follow whatever procedure you like. If the keys are sent to me via TNT, would I then remit payment to you via bank transfer to an Australian account? Also, would you also send a rental agreement etc. along with the keys?

If you need it, I can provide a rental reference from Meriton, where I currently stay.

Please email me your phone number and a time which will suit you for me to call (Italy time), and we can discuss this on the phone. Thanks.

Andrew

1) First you will have to send me your full name and address. I will need them for the shipping.
2) I go to the TNT store and leave the Keys and the contract onto your name as the intended receiver.
3) TNT will check the envelope to see if everything is OK with it and also the legal papers that will come along with the Keys.
4) TNT will send you a delivery notification to let you know they have the Keys and the papers in their custody.
5) At this point you will have to go to a Western Union Agent
Location and make a money deposit on the TNT payment agent name for the amount we agreed (first month + 1000 bond deposit) .
6) After you make the deposit you will have to send the info about the money deposit to TNT (MTCN, sender's name and address)
7) TNT will verify the payment informations and if everything is in order they will deliver the Keys and the contract to you .
8) After you receive the package , You will go and check the apt and in 2 days you must contact them and tell them if you keep the apt or not, if all is in order you will instruct TNT to send me the information about the money deposit and I will be able to receive the funds . If you don`t like the apt they will send your money back to you and you will send them the keys and the contract to them.
I will pay TNT for the shipping and you will pay Western Union for the Money Transfer fee .
Let me know if we can do this.

Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for those details. Please forward the envelope to my fiance's office. This is easiest for me as my work keeps me on the road, and I can't receive packages / calls easily. My fiance will then be able to organize the $2000 Western Union payment to the TNT agent.

Thanks

The game is afoot! She has been kind enough to provide me with a step-by-step rundown of the payment / key delivery procedure. I have provided her with the delivery and telephone details of my "fiance" Donna Adney. Aye - here is the rub. Donna Adney is actually the Commanding Superintendent at the Surry Hills Police Station in Sydney. The telephone number is for the police station lol. Of course, I didn't expect 'Elizabeth' to make use of these details, but it was satisfying all the same sending them, knowing that 'Elizabeth' still thinks that I am still a fish on her hook!

I proceeded to Western Union and sent the payment lol. Nah. I searched for a fake MCTN number online and sent the details to this scammer. At the very least I want to make him get up off his butt, physically go to a Western Union office and make a fool of himself.

The payment has bee successfully received and validated so as a result, the shipment is ready to start in about 2 hours. We will keep you updated with further details. The shipping time will be 24-36 hours maximum.

Thank you for choosing our services !

I also performed a TRACEROUTE on the originating IP - 71.235.123.112 - and I suspect that this person is actually in Bolton, Connecticut.

There is more to come! Stay tuned for the next instalment of this saga. Preview: email from Superintendent Donna Adney to Elizabeth highlighting cooperation between Bolton police and Australian police! Suggestions that video camera footage exists of scammer trying to obtain their funds! & much more! If this person really is in bolton he will pee his pants lol!
