Post subject:  Craigslist Rent vacation apartment

Hello,
we are going to spend a week in NYC soon and we found an apartment on Craigslist.
The apartment is very beautiful and very cheap, maybe it is enough to be sure it's a scam.

BUT:
- The name of the owner corresponds to a respectable IT professional (has a technical blog, wrote books. Well google is our friend...
- He answered using an email address actually linked to a lot of technical websistes, techincal message boards, linkedin and also facebook
- sent us his phone number. The phone number (mobile) is linked to his office, located very close to the apartment
- his available for a meeting with a friend of us to show the apartment (well we don't have a friend in NYC, actually)

SO
- maybe we are dealing with some one who stealed some one else's identity ?
- Is there a SAFE way to transfer money using a kind of escrow service?

Thanks

People often go through a lot of trouble to make sure you think that they are not scamming you. It is best to not wire money, and to pay in person whenever possible. I am curious whether or not this was a scam or this guy was telling the truth. And what ended up happening here. Any info would be great.
