Hello everybody,

I'm so glad I found this site. Sorry this post is so long.

I have a question about the roommates.com site.
There are 6 months left on my lease. I can move out without breaking the lease if I find somebody to take it. The landlord is advertising the place on Craigslist, but finding my replacement is ultimately my problem. I have to screen them for compatibility/respectability and show the place myself.

So I thought, hey, maybe I can find someone on roommates.com, it'll be easier to screen the candidates and it seems like they get a lot of traffic. Lo and behold, there were 3-4 people on the site who looked like they'd be compatible with my landlord's policies and my comfort level. I sent them each a nice message with information about the place, the situation, etc.

Now roommates.com says I have some messages from potential roommates - but I have to pay $6 to look at them??!

I was about to do it when my BS sensors went off. Why should I PAY to look at these messages? That seems kind of shady. How can I be assured that these are actual responses? It doesn't even say who the messages are from, they could be spam, or responses from people I'm not interested in. Plus... I didn't have to pay to SEND messages... this makes me think that a lot of spammers/scammers are going to take advantage.

So: I'm desperate and running out of time and money, and I know that makes me REALLY vulnerable... and gullible.

Do you guys know about Roommates.com ? How reputable are they? It seems like they can rake in tons of cash by preying on desperate people like me... sure, I'll pay you $20 a month, and you can feed me all the scams and spam you want! Is it worth it?

I sent this email to roommates.com:

Hope you are well - when I login I don't see any mail at all. Do I have to pay to even see it in my inbox?

They wrote:

Our Fraud Department works daily at finding scammer accounts on the website and removing them. Whenever we remove a scammer, any emails they may have sent out are also automatically deleted from the website. However, when you
receive mail in your inbox, the system will send out an automatic email letting you know about it. If they were a scammer and we removed them after that automatic mailer was sent to you, you would come to your inbox and find that it wasn't there. I do apologize for the misunderstanding, however we feel that removing these emails from the site entirely is a safer course of action to help prevent our customers from being scammed by these individuals.

Please let me know if there are any further questions,

There are sites out there that make you pay to see your emails/messages . . . I know when I signed up for site where you could find old classmates I did not pay anything, but I could not send or get emails from people . . . I could see who emailed me and the subject, but not read the content of the message. Some sites will suck you in and they make you pay to get full service, so it is one of those things were you have to decide how much do you want to see the info in the message.
