Hi, everyone.

I got the EXACT same e-mail as 12CandyCane a few weeks ago at the property management firm I work for. I posted a Craig's List Ad announcing a few vacancies and this is one of the first responses I received.

I became suspicious when "John Peterson" would not answer my specific questions, and was willing to send money without ever filling out a rental application. And when I told him before we proceeded with ANYTHING, he would have to fill out an application. Needless to say, he did not respond to any more of my e-mails.

I knew for certain when, after the fact, I got 2 more e-mails from different individuals with the exact same wording as the first e-mail from "John Peterson". I knew it was a scam, but couldn't figure out how it worked. So after a google search, I found this website, and it makes so much sense. Always, always use your common sense.

I was new to the Craig's List game, but now am on the lookout for similar suspicious activity & fishy e-mails. Thanks for all the information, guys. Be safe. :D

Cee

So very glad I found this site, and thanks much to all of you for posting this information !
I was looking for a room-mate under very similar circumstances,and,within a day I had
a "Kelly Benson",purporting to be on her way to the US,needing a rm.,and wanting my details in
order to send a money order for rent and,a "little extra" to pay to the shippers who, this
supposed 'Chemist" said, "would be bringing her "stuffs",lol. What a world ! Glad though that
I found this forum. Helps a lot to know there are other people who still believe in "looking out"
for one another.

We heard from the same guy. Got a nice reference from his supposed landlord too. But then we heard from a Larry Brown with the following information:

'larry003brown@yahoo.com'
Quote:
With regards to the property i am inquiring about, i will like to get some more details about it,I am currently in the UK and i am Relocating over to the US to do a survey for my employer (LINK INSURANCE GROUP(UK)), as we are about to open an office in the state, so due to my non presence to inspect the Property,
i will like you to give me the below detail

# I need full details including address of the property and pictures if available
# Monthly rentals/security deposits
# If utilities is added to monthly rent
# When the property would be available
# Mail me the total move in cost

I awaits your response soon.
Regards.

Got us really suspicious and then googled John Peterson's address and found this scam page. Note: We replied to Larry Brown's email and it bounced back. Obviously another scam.

Scammer Strikes again (or tries to anyway)...

My fiance trying to move out of her first apartment posted on craigslist. See received the following email from a "Janet Burrows" (burrows.janet3@yahoo.com):

"I came across your AD posted on http://www..Craigslist.org that you have a sublet space available...I am Janet burrows,25,female,from USA but lived and work in China,I am a graduate of Buffalo University,NY where i studied Economics,I worked as a sales Representative in a fast growing Industry,Goliath Industry,China.so i will be coming to USA middle of this month to advertise some of our products.I will want you to confirm the availability of the space, what price does it goes for?and how long you are willing to rent it out?Waiting to read from you Asap.
Regards
Janet...."

with enthusiasm, we responded, and as usual the scammer mentioned we'd get a check from her boss, we'd need to redistribute the extra money to her as that was her moving expenses. (Big red flag right) After discussing the topic for a while and getting amped up ready to put threw the paper work, I did a quick search for " 'Goliath Industry', 'china.so' " which is how I ended up here. THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who contributes to this site. You just saved us from a HUGE mistake. To anyone who's getting these emails from this would-be renter, GET OUT! Tell them its rented and move on.

I am glad that you did not get hit, and that you posted all of the info you did about the scammer. Just like you, someone could google that info and then find your post and be saved.

(I love Google)

Another way that you can help to spread the word is to go to the top of this page and you will see a "Share" button right under our logo. You can directly link and share this same information with people on any social networking site that you are a member of. This is a GREAT way to get the info out to others.

I googled John Peterson to find that he is a professor at the University of Edenborough Scotland. I got his email address and emailed him. He emailed me back and said that he was "the real John Peterson" and that his name was being used and had nothing to do with him. He advised that I notify several web advertisers ie Craig's List-- which I did not do as this person or persons just scan the listings and prey. I don't think there is a way to stop them. We just need to be informed.

Good for you. Everyone needs to remember google is your friend when fighting scammers.

On another note my daughter used craigs list to find a place to live. She found a room to rent in her area. She met with the people renting the room in person and saw the room they had for rent. She has a friend who along with her husband is looking for a place to move. She also used craigs list, but has came across a scammer. She told my daughteer that the person is currently living in, where else, Africa. I told my daughter it is a scam and she said "I know" My daughter has not been able to convince her friend it is a scam. The next time I talk to my daughter I will tell her to have her friend read the posts here. Hopefully this will convice her friend. Thanks to all of you who have taken your time to post your information. You have saved many, althrough you may never know, from being scammed.

Or you can email your daughter a link to this site that she can forward to her friend. If you go to the top of this page, right under the ScamVictimsUnited Logo you will see a SHARE button . . . this allows you to email this page directly to someone, or even post it on a social networking site that you are on.

It is an easy way to spread the word and help fight these scams.

I recently received a couple emails from a 'Janet Burrows' inquiring about my apartment I've been trying to sublet. The email address she used was: <burrowsjanet3@yahoo.com>, which is slightly different than the others she's used. The first email said:

Hello There
I came across your AD posted on http://www.Craigslist.org that you have a sublet space available...I am Janet burrows,25,female,from USA but lived and work in China,I am a graduate of Buffalo University,NY where i studied Economics,I worked as a sales Representative in a fast growing Industry,Goliath Industry,China.so i will be coming to USA middle of this month to advertise some of our products.I will want you to confirm the availability of the space, what price does it goes for?and how long you are willing to rent it out?Waiting to read from you Asap.
Regards
Janet....

I emailed her back and told her that it was still available, and I gave her of all the information she asked for. She emailed me back saying:

Thanks for your prompt responses and am okay with the price and
explanations and i want you to consider it rented to me ok...I am
very happy for your reply that shows the kind of person i am
thinking of renting from and how kind you are..For the payment
that is not a problem at all...Because my boss will be highly
responsible for all the expenses of the payment all i have to do
is to confirm the amount of the space including the utilities and
then get it sent to him including the information in which the
payment will be issued to....So all i require of you is for you to send me
your
FULL NAME
FULL ADDRESS
PHONE NUMBER
I will need you to get back to me with this information asap so
that i can forward it to my boss to issue the check and i also
want you to know the check will be more than the deposit for the
rent,The remainder of the money will be for my travel expenses and
all other things which i might need you to help me get in the
house,You will have to transfer part of the money to my travel
agent so he would be able to take care of my travel arrangements
ok.I hope to read from you asap.
Regards.

This email sounded really sketchy to me, so I called someone and they told me to leave her alone, because it sounded like she was trying to scam me. Sure enough, when I googled her email address, this site popped up. I followed the advice someone on this site said and emailed her back saying the place had already been rented. Thank you SO MUCH for posting to this site. You saved me!
