I am glad that you found this site before you got scammed.
In a "typical" roommate scam they will send you the check, and the once you have cashed/deposited it something will suddenly come up . . . family member dies, or becomes very ill . . . and they can no longer leave and they have to back out of the roomate deal. Since you cannot return the check to them, because you cashed/deposited it, they ask you to just wire the money back to them . . . sometimes they even let you keep a couple of hundred for "your trouble". Sooner or later, the check comes back as counterfeit, and the bank is calling you asking for the money back.
