There is a lady who contacted me saying she works for JEK consulting. She is moving here from London to live and will pay 1st and last months rent.

She says she has client based in US that will be sending me almost $4000.00, most of which is to pay shipper.

I have told her client needs to send certified cashiers check for exact amount of rent to me and same for shipper if her goods are being shipped here in advance of her arrival.

Is this the best way to handle this? I do not want to get scammed.

It is a scam. If she asks you to send her ANY MONEY do not do so!

Shawn: Thank you for your response. How can I tell when it is not a scam?

There are some responses to my roommate ad that appear to be identical. Those I do not respond too.

I really need a roommate, but do not want to be scammed.

If is is NOT a scam they will want to know information about the room, if they have their own room or will be sharing with someone, parking, location, can they come and see it or can you send pictures, all of those typical things that you would think about and want to know if YOU were moving.

If is is a scam they will respond right away saying that they will send you money, with no questions about the place, sight unseen. They are more concerned about getting the money to you than anything else. They are almost always overseas, so they cannot come and see the place or bring you the rent in person.

Biggest red flag, at any point if they ask you to wire THEM money, even if it is from the amount that they sent YOU for first and last month rent.

I felt kind of ridiculous  asking how to tell when it is not a scam. I so appreciate your insight and the insights of others. :D

Thank you so much for this forum. Without it, I think I would have allowed myself to be conned again :!:

Don't do it. Mine was a scam and I almost fell for it. The check I received cleared in 3 days - but bounced after 10 - didn't send any money because I had seen this site. Then "she " sent 4money orders (800.00) from Walmart and they were counterfeit.

JUST SAY NO and keep looking!!

There is a girl who e-mailed me about my room for rent and this is what she had said...... I am having my boss send payment to you. He is in charge of my humanitarian job and I instructed him to send my new months salary to you. I am sure this fund will cover my rent, traveling expenses and bills but most importantly my promise to the charity heart foundation for my donation. The whole of my last months salary will be issued out to you, kindly get it cashed and deduct the fee for the room and security deposit and anything else you need for me to live there and send the rest back to me via western union. Also, deduct the charges for the money transfer. I look forward to living in the states sincerely Donna Martinez................ I believe this to be a scam but I just wanted to send it to you guys to make sure I am right before I deny her request.
Thank you Keith

For Keith: This is definately a classic 419 scam... anytime someone sends you more money than they owe you and especially if they want the remainer wired then it's a scam.

I have a total of $8000.00 in checks which were from the last bogus roommate. Any suggestions what to do with them?

I framed them as a reminder -" Don't get fooled again" I am sure there is someone you should contact but scams being so prevalent ....
