I am looking for a gay/bi roommate. I am bi sexual and I'm afraid of homophobias. My ex bf lost all of his friends by coming out and I would hate for college to be like high school. I have never been scammed but I wonder if roommate sites are safe. The choices I have are going through with it on my own, having a roommate from my school or using a roommate site. If I use a roommate site how can I use it in a safe manner?

Try the college bulletin boards as well as the ones found at the grocery stores, laundrymats etc. That way you're only dealing with local people and will be less likely to get scammed. Whatever you do, don't respond to anyone from "overseas". Those are almost always a scam. They will send you a check/money order in excess of the amount needed (it "will" be fraudulant) and ask you to "wire" them or someone else (like a moving company) the remainder. Always deal locally when you can.

I am not sure how you would word an ad for a roommate to make sure that they are tolerant of gay/bi . . . maybe do a search to see if there is a gay/bi organization in your area, and then only advertise for a roommate through them.
