I'm not even sure this falls under the category of scamming or just abuse.

I dated a girl i really liked. The relationship was kept largely platonic - she wouldn't tell me her home address or introduce me to her family or friends*, but she kept asking for money and give me stories how she had been a victim of identity theft. I felt sorry for her and helped her out. During the course of couple of months together she kept asking for more and more and in the end I called it off in frustration. I felt really bad because I called her every name under the sun. After a month passed, we sort of forgave each other and she told me loved me several times, and asked for money for a trip. It was around 2000 dollars. She actually asked for 4300 dollars, but I hadn't enough to give her.

(*) i met some of friends and family prior to this time. We were dating very casually before this ever started.

We met and it was kind of awkward and I gave her a check, but afterwards she cut off all communication except for abrupt texts calling me a psycho and she was going to report me for harassing her. I was more distraught about her telling me she loved me than the money, which she was now in denial of. I probably didn't say some nice things. All in all, in the 2 months we were together (with a trip in between on 6 weeks) - she managed to get 7000 dollars out of me.

Does this fall under the definition of scam. Or was it just stupidity on my part. And is there anyway I can get the money back or report her. I feel awful and abused.

TIA,
Richard

Yes, this would be a scam. The only difference between your story and the majority of the stories on this site is that you actually saw your scammer face to face . . . most of the people here encountered their scammer on a dating site and only knew them via email/text message/phone calls.

Have you thought about taking her to small claims court in order to recover your money?
