Hi I am really desperate. My mother is being scammed. She has been chatting to a man who claims to have been born in the dominican republic, his father was shot, then he went to Ireland with his irish mother. He claims to have studied there and joined the airforce, then worked in Canada and has two daughters. His wife turned to drugs so he divorced and his mother helps care for his daughter. He claims he travels a lot for work and is now working in Nigeria. He told my mother he had one of his daughters with him and he had finished his work so he decided to send his daughter home and come to meet my mother in melbourne (Australia). He even sent an Itinerary with their supposed names on it. He has only shown two pictures of himself and my mothers says she saw him on webcam (white male, early 50's). Then a few days before leaving Nigeria his daughter fell down the stairs and was injured seriously, he needed money. I warned my mother that this sounded like a typical scam and asked her if he had asked for money. She lied to me, I found western Union transfer receipts for over 10000 australian dollars (over 9000 american dollars). I then showed her that the itinerary he sent her was completely false by checking the flight numbers on the airline website. The idiot didn't even make sure they were correct. My mother insisted that in two days he was going to be in Ireland and that I please wait two days and leave her alone. I promised her that something would happen and he would not travel to ireland. My sister is aware of this and is also very concerned. As predicted, he has sent an email claiming he was hijacked and needs more money!!! We are very concerned. My mother cannot afford to send any money, she doesn't even have a job at the moment. She is in denial and I am scared she will never forgive me for invading her privacy ( I found the western union receipts in her room). I don't know what else to do or say. She is lonely and doesn't want to believe all this. After all the warnings I gave her, she sat for 2 hours chatting and giggling with this scammer. She is going to fall so hard when she eventually realises, and the debt will just keep growing. I am so desperate. My sister and I have read his emails, I know it is terrible to have invaded her privacy like this. But we are so sure it's a scam. His english is not consistent from one email to another, it is quite terrible in most, yet he claims to have studied engineering in dublin and worked in Canada... impossible!

It's so sad. Please help me with some sort of advice

You need to get her to this website so that she can read all the other stories just like hers! She is definitely being scammed and needs to see how common this scam is by coming to this site and reading the others stories so she can see the similarities to hers. We can help her understand more once she reads thru the Dating/Romance forum then we can help her break free from this person. I myself had a very similar experience.. it lasted over a year and then on his way to the airport he claimed he was mugged and needed money... I didn't send any money and he "disappeared"... typical of the scammer to move on to another if they don't get anything from their victims and the ones who do send them money... they will keep "milking" them for more using many other "stories of disasters" as long as the victim is willing to send money, once they stop he "will" disappear. Please show her this website and have her read thru the Dating/Romance forum.

I am so sorry to hear your mother is being scammed. Go to http://romancelovescams.mysubdn.com/forum/index.php#2
and read what to look for in a scammer.

You will get support on this site as well as the one above. I hope you will be able to convince her.

Thanks so much for your replies. This nightmare has finally ended. I spent this weekend reading all of the websites I could find about nigerian romance scams. I showed them to my mother and she insisted he was a good person and that he was honest. She wouldn't admit she sent him money. She even prayed for his "daughter" to recover. She insisted he was travelling home to Dublin today and that there would be proof. Last night I said to her "Mum, I promise you he will not go to Dublin. Something will happen and he will tell you he can't travel". She was shocked at the confidence with which I told her this. Today she read an email he sent saying he was hijacked and needed 4000 euros. She was such a mess. This is so horrible and sad. My mother is such a kind and caring person. She can't spare that money, it took a lot of work to gather it and now it is gone. She is in shock now. I'm can't even begin to explain how much it hurts me to see her like this. I would never wish this on anyone. I hope more people learn about these terrible organisations and we can prevent more people being tricked like this.

You mom has great daughters to look out for her this way... she raised you well and can be proud of you! I'm so glad she has finally seen that it's a scam and can now move on to recovering from it. Please make sure she immediately ceases all contact with this person! Sites like ours do help to stop a lot of it but we can't always reach people in time... please make sure to pass this on to anyone and everyone you come in contact with as by word of mouth is a very good way to get the message across to others who may not have contact with the internet. Let us know if we can be of any more help.

That is what the scammers look for . . . someone that will trust them and care about them.

Please, let your mother know that she can come here, or to the other Romance Scam site mentioned, and know that she can share her story with others who have been there too. This can help a person to heal knowing that they are not alone . . . it is a type of therapy.

Also, you might want to suggest she get one of these books

Thanks so much for the advice, I think she is going to see her counsellor and I will see if I can buy the book for her. I only wish I could have warned her a few days earlier...

I think a lot of us wish we would have know what we know now a few days earlier . . . that is why we can really understand where your mother is coming from . . . we have walked in her shoes.

I am glad you were able to convince her. Would it be possible for you to post his username, email address, IP address and any emails he sent your mother. That way if someone else googles his information he will come up as a scammer. If your mother or you don't want to post it then pm me and I will give you my email address so you can forward the information to me and I will post it on this site and some of the others I am a member of.
