I ran into a similar scam on Match.com. Guy's name was James Reilly. Allegedly from PA on temporary assignment on Lagos, Nigeria. Took him about 2 weeks to ask for money when "his company wouldn't pay him for his work". Got a weird e-mail today from an alleged doctor at a hospital I can't find anywhere on the net saying he'd been robbed and stabbed and asking for information. Huh?

[quote="paulaprotection" They will send you checks to deposit- THEY ARE FAKE AND YOU CAN BE ARRESTED FOR ACCEPTING OR DEPOSITING THEM! [/quote]

You can not be arrested for accepting the checks sent to you via a shipper. The only time you run the risk of legal trouble is if you cash the checks and they are returned, however, if you pay the money back you do not run the risk of legal trouble.

Hey Russell,
What I think paulaprotection might have meant is that when the banks learn that you might be a victim of a fraud they warn you in very stern ways because they can never be sure if you are a willing accomplice or not. The banks will say you can be arrested for a felony.

Thanks for clarifying the legal ramifications though. In a way it is good that the banks will give such stern warnings. It is a reminder that when we find ourselves helping these "criminals" we are making ourselves accomplices in crime.

ON THE TOPIC OF VICTIMS BEING ARRESTED -

YES - it does happen.

I know of several cases where the victim deposited the check, wired the money, and the police sent officers to the victims house to arrest them claiming that the victim must be "in on" the scam. Other banks have used the debate that once you sign the back of the check, you are accepting the responsibility for it, so when it comes back as counterfeit you are now "attempting to defraud a financial institution".

This is why education is the key, and why we need to get the flyers posted at the bottom of this page

posted at all teller stations in banks.

This is amazing! I am pretty sure that I have met a scammer on E Harmony. But I have to say, of all of the matches that I have met on that site, he was the only one that didn't sit well with me. Falling in love right away, having to travel to Nigeria to visit a sick uncle, so on and so forth. As fine as he was, I WISH it could have been the real thing..lol. I chose not to ignore the things that just didn't make sense. Alot of this is about TAKING YOU TIME and common sense. I would NEVER send any money to a person that I have never met. I would never believe someone that says they love me and we have never met or have no contact info on them. (Home #, office # etc..) Some things just didn't make sense and I have decided to listen to my intuition.

I will also say that E Harmony did send me an email letting me know that they have terminated his membership and although due to privacy they couldn't tell me the reasons that they would advise me not to continue my communication with him. I appreciated the email and have taken it for what it is.

I have dated online before and met some amazing people and friends. But just like with anything else, "they" are out there. I would advise everyone to be listen to your intuition, use common sense and know that TIME is your BEST friend and reveals all things!

Sunshine! :?

Hey Sunshine,
how about letting us know who this scammer is! Yes, he was kicked off of eHarmony, but he'll be back using another email address. He'll probably stick close to the same name though. He's also probably on other dating sites using the old name and email address. So have a heart and help us.

Ken Walford in now on BigChurch (Profile -Giftenakire), I have been chatting briefly with him on yahoo (kenwalfordonline), he gave me his cell no and when we spoke very briefy ( hardly audible) enough to notice his voice didn't seem american, he says he lives in Rhode Island USA and once lived in CA. Suspicious I did a phone number check and his number is from Romania, funny that! I always check out people I chat with, I googled his name and found this site. I thought you might like updated info on this person.

Hi cantgetme,
In my dealings with Ken Walford, I attempted to discover if he lived anywhere in the USA. There is a Ken Walford (age 51 now, I believe) who lived in California. I actually used one of the online people finders to get information. I believe it is a stolen identity. He told me that he presently lives in Chicago. He gave me an address that turned out to be a business in Chicago. Ken Walford told me that Gift Akire was his engineer for his "project" in Nigeria. Has he told you about how the "youths" in Nigeria kidnapped his engineer, beat him and held him hostage, yet? This was why he had to pay them $30,000 and did not have enough money for his plane fare home. Oh, he also told me Gift Akire is from Arkansas. You'll find there is no one in the USA under that name either. "Ken Walford" has more than one email address too. When he took another one out, I got a notice from his yahoo account. The scammers do this to take out more than one profile on the online dating sites. It was a surprise to him that yahoo did that.

Good for you that you took the initiative to check this scammer out. By the way, since June, I have received numerous scammers from eHarmony. The latest is Spencer from Skokie, Illinois. Says his name is William Spencer Lawrence and he is a civil engineer and is currently in London for an ongoing project until the beginning of next month. His email address is lawrencespencer16@yahoo.com. The IP address from the two emails he sent me track out from Nigeria. I just bet come the beginning of next month, some disaster is going to befall ole William Spencer Lawrence and the unfortunate he has "hooked" will be the only person on earth who can save him by sending him money. If I sound cynical, it is because I was foolish enough to take out a subscription on eHarmony for a year. Everytime they run a "free" weekend promotion, I get all kind of scammers. I guess I am in the target demographics.

Take Care of yourself out there...this goes for the guys as well as gals.

I have also been scammed by a potential mate from eharmony. He pretended to be a supervisor with an oil company about to retire and start his own oil company. He goes by the name of David Williams and his email address is davewilliamsprivate@yahoo.com. I traced his ip address to the United Kingdom. I read on a link off the internet that scammers not only use Nigeria, but they also come from Russia, Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. So please be very careful. I do not have my account for eharmony and I don't plan on joining any other online dating service. This man scammed me out of money that put me in a financial strain. It wasn't a lot but enough to make an impact on my finances. These people are very good at what they do and I was extremely naive. He was everything that I was looking for in a mate and I had no reasons to think that he was a scammer. I did talk with him and believed him to be a good person. I didn't know about scammers until now, but I sure will be on the alert for them for now on.

Is it too much of a 'blanket statement' to say that when you meet someone on the internet and they ask for money it's time to:
1. run away screaming into the night
2. block their phone number, email address and IM information
3. report them to sites like these and the site on which you've met them

It's unnatural for someone that we haven't even met in the flesh to ask for money isn't it? And yet after the 'relationship' of online dating, phone calls and IM's it's possible to love and believe someone when they lie and ask such ridiculous things as 'can you wire me money'.

These people are professionals. thank you for providing this safe place to vent, and seek encouragement and guidance from those who have gone before us.
