I am selling my car. I almost got taken buy a stolen check.. If I put my car online.. What is the safest way to be paid?? You really can't trust anyone any more.. I have heard that almost every thing can be forged.. I also heard that if you say CASH ONLY you had better have one of those marking pens to make sure that the money is real.. Thanks.. Al

AL just demand cash for the car, and yes definately visit office depot for a set of pens that detect counterfeit bills. They are not very expensive and well worth the money spent for peace of mind. I did that when I sold a car last year, the dude acted as though I didnt trust him but none of them turned black so I was safe.

Now beware though that if a bill is really old the ink will turn black, different paper was used back then.

If they are from another state they can wire you the cash.

Cashier's Checks and Money Orders are not any safer then accepting a personal check.

Postal money orders are perfectly safe, just take them to the Post Office, They will authenticate them and cash them. Do not just deposit them in your account, go to the Post Office first.

I hate to disagree with you, but as the title of this section of the forum says, there are Counterfeit Postal Money Orders out there. They are as "safe" as a cashier's check.

I see many counterfeit money orders every week, I said, if you take it to the Post Office and they cash it, they authenticate it first, they should never cash a counterfeit Postal Money Order.

It is similar to this situation, if you take a counterfeit cashier's check into the bank it is drawn on, you should never be concerned about a counterfeut, that bank has the means to verify the check while you wait.

If you take a check or a money order and you simply deposit it into your account, if it is not drawn on that bank, then you run into problems with counterfeits.

I hope that makes it clearer.

I would ask for cash - they have to get the car from you anyway, have them bring cash when picking up the vehicle.
