Yesterday I received an overnighted envelope from USPS. Inside was a small white envelope containing two USPS money orders, each for $850. Both are HAND WRITTEN addressed to me, and from a person I have never heard of. There was not anything else in the envelope, no letter, nothing. However, I googled her name and found that she in fact IS a real person, the address is correct and everything. I found the sender's complete contact information including phone numbers and e-mail address. I have been struggling a great deal lately financially, so I got excited and deposited the money orders today in my bank account. When I told my dad about it he kept saying it had to be a scam, and I listened because it is just way too good to be true to receive $1,700 from a complete stranger. The money orders have not yet processed and posted to my bank account.

If they are fake, will I get in trouble for this, other than having to pay it back to my financial institution? Should I contact the sender?

Please help me out here.

Go to the link below. There are several good topics there about fake checks. Take time to read as many as you have time for.

Do not spend or use any of the money. I would also CALL your financial institution and let them know that AFTER you deposited these checks you found out that they are fake and you wanted to alert them.

If you contact the sender they MAY try to make you believe that this is all legit . . . or they may have no idea that they are being used as a middle man in this scam. If you do choose to call them, just do not let them change your mind and talk you into cashing those checks.

Hello - My name is Lisa and back in March I received an email from a company called Safeway, Inc., who claimed to be a Secret Shopper company. They, too, sent me 2 money orders totalling 982.00 each, and they looked extremely legitimate, and they were supposedly USPS money orders. I looked at them, my roommate looked at them, and again, they seemed legit. We went to my bank and deposited them, and even the bank teller did not question their authenticity. Things were going fine for a little over a week, then I received a letter from the bank in the mail, with copies of the money orders, and at the top of the copy it stated - "Altered/Counterfeit Money Orders"! Now, I'm $1,500.00 in the whole, and the kcker is that the lady I talked to at the bank in the Fraud department treated me like I was the criminal!! She asked my why I ddn't take the money orders directly to the post office. I proceeded to tell her that if I had even a small inkling that the money orders were bogus, I WOULD HAVE taken them to the post office! I didn't even know that money orders could be fake! I am 50 years old and should have known better but hopefully my story can keep you from falling victim to these scam artists, so turn those money orders into the USPS as soon as possible!
