These scams work the same as the counterfeit cashier's check scams, so for more information please go to this page.

Here are US Postal Service instructions on how to detect counterfeit.

I signed up for one of these scams. They sent me two US Postal Money Orders worth almost $2,000. I was instructed to cash them, and wire the cash (less my 10%) to an address in Haiti.

I checked with the post office, and they are counterfeit money orders.

Been awhile since I've been on here.

If you think you are in possession of fake postal money orders, you can IM me, or send me an email to mdbjr2@charter.net. Provide me with the 11 digit serial number on the money order. I can then tell you if the number fits the routine. Every once in awhile one will hit, but almost 100% of the time, the numbers generated by these thieves do not.

We are now going on at least 5-6 years since this scam has begun, and I am still seeing between 100-200 of these fake money orders come across my desk on a daily basis.

Be careful out there.

Hello. Long time visitor, first time poster. Just today I received via UPS an envelope and inside was a single typed instruction page and a smaller manilla envelope. Inside the envelope were three USPS money orders for $985.75 each. I was instructed to be a mystery shopper at a money gram location near me. Part of my duties as a mystery shopper was to wire the three money orders minus $300 and report in detail the cleanliness of the store and the attitude of the attendant. I immediately contacted and visited my local sheriff's department. I actually was fortunate enough to sit down with our actual sheriff and explain what happened. During our conversation, the would-be fraudster called me. I asked him to hold and gave the phone to the sheriff. The sheriff tried to get as much information as possible. At the conclusion of our conversation, the sheriff informed me of this growing epidemic and made it seem like a futile effort because its so rampant. I know our economy is ripe for these criminals to take advantage of us, but if we stick together and somehow combat these individuals, we can make a difference. I do NOT want to read about an innocent victim AGAIN being arrested for trusting people. Our nation deserves better.

I could not agree with you more! There is a bill that is being looked at in Minnesota, and if we can get it to pass here maybe we can get it to pass in other states as well. Please write a letter to the Senators encouraging them to pass this bill. You can find all of the info about who to write to at this post . . . viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3458

I was able to send correspondence to all four of the politicians listed on your blog. I hope I make a difference and this bill spreads like wildfire.

I am a scam victim. I got a fedex envelope with fake money orders in it. I did not know they were fake and tried to cash them. It was supposed to be for a secret shopper job. Instead, I got arrested and spent 5 days in jail. I have never been in trouble before. Now I am on probation until I go back to court. I tried to tell them but got charged with forgery and almost fraud. I checked my email yesterday and had emails from those people in my inbox. The emails were in all caps like they were yelling at me about why I hadn't done the job and sent them the money. What nerve they have after sending me those.

I am so sorry to hear that you are a scam victim and that on top of that you were arrested for something YOU were a VICTIM of!

We have a page of resources and places you can report the scam to at
http://scamvictimsunited.com/Reporting_scams.htm

We often use the media to do that. If you would ever be willing to speak with the media, please contact me privately so that I can get your contact information.

We are also working to encourage lawmakers to change the laws to better protect people from these scams. You can read more about that at http://scamvictimsunited.blogspot.com/2 ... -will.html
