I'm selling a notebook online, and the buyer wants to pay with a USPS money order. They said they are willing to wait for it to clear before I send the item out. From reading here I've found out that it can take several months (I'm sure they're not willing to wait). If I took it to the post office to cash would they be able to let me know immediately if it was a fake or not?

Take it to the Post Office that is the best bet, I can tell from the serial number if it is good.

So the post office can let me know pretty much immediately if the MO is fake?

Yes, there is a way to look at the serial number, do you have multiple money orders or just one?

I don't have any right now. I was trying to avoid selling to someone out of state, but I may have to. If USPS can verify right away if I bring them in, I'll go ahead with the transaction (not sending the product until payment is confirmed, of course). Obviously if I get 3 for $1000 or something, I know it's a scam. They just seemed a bit too eager (didn't ask questions or anything) to buy.

Here is the site you all should be looking at for more information on how to really verify a check or money order. Though moneygrams information is good it is lacking in a few areas that are important. Simply knowing how to spot a potential scam is one thing but consumers need to know how to properly verify a check or money order and also need to know the consequences of not checking it out first before taking it to the bank.
