I've been scammed by a guy who is very well known in this site. Jamie Alan aka Jared/Pavel Plikc, aka Alex Whiff, et al.... I've hunted him down to a township outside London, UK where there are only 3 Western Unions. I was taken for $3700. I hope no one paid more. Also, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well, my advice would be what anyone would tell you--if something sounds too good to be true, it is. Shame you had to lose that much money to learn that lesson.

I found this great apartment on Miami Beach as I am looking to relocate from Boston. It was advertised on craigslist.org. It is a beach front property with wrap around balcony, 2 bedrooms in a modern building for $700 including a/c electricity etc. It had pictures etc. I replied to the add asking if this was legitimate and a day later I got the response from a gmail account and a person by the name of David saying that he moved to London, UK due to a new job and he left the keys and signed agreement at Rent.com. Being a little suspicious I checked for rents in that building and surrounding building and they are no where near what David is asking, they are much more. David asked me for my financial and personal information by email. I haven't agreed to anything yet but I asked him for his telephone number in London so I can call him. I doubt that I will get a response but I beleive that this is definitely a scam where he is going to ask me to wire money somewhere out of the country. I checked rent.com from google and I got was a list of a bunch of scam links and the lead to ScamVictimsUnited. I've heard of almost every Nigerian scam there is except this one but it has all the ingredients to smell just like the others.

Thank you all for posting your stories! Seeing them helped me avoid being tempted by an apartment deal in Washington DC that seemed way too good to be true!

I inquired about an apartment advertised on Craigslist, and the person wrote back with a few pictures of the apartment, a request for information about myself, and a reference to rent.com. The monthly rent was $1,100, but an apartment of that size and quality in that location, with a parking space, would cost at least $2,600/month.

I had some misgivings about the rent, some typos in the message, and the fact that the person didn't provide a phone number. But, being a greedy fool, I wrote back with information about what a great tenant I'd be, including where I work and how much money I make.

Then I got this reply:
Quote:
Hello [name redacted]
If we decide to proceed with this transaction, I will have to contact rent.com and provide them all the necessary information, so they can start the process right away. I will need your full name and address for that. You will receive a notification from rent.com shortly after that, together with all the instructions to follow and the invoice as well.
Regarding the payment, you will be instructed to deposit the money, first month rent plus one month security deposit to a rent.com account. They will hold and insure your money until you check the apartment and decide if you want take it or not. That is how their buyer protection policy works. As far as my concerns, I will be glad to know that
rent.com has the possession of the money during the delivery period. That is my insurance.
As soon as the funds have been deposited into their account, they will immediately start the shipping process. The keys and rental contract will be delivered at your address in no more than 3 working days. You will be given a ten days inspection period from the day you receive the keys and contract at home. If you decide to hold the apartment, then you will have to authorize rent.com to release the funds to me, and the transaction will be completed. If you will not be satisfied with the apartment, you will be able to send the keys and contract back through the same service and ask rent.com to return the funds to you.
Though I am sure you will love the apartment, it is good to know that you do have this second option available. If you wish to proceed with renting the apartment, please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through rent.com right away.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Shannon

I felt a bit more trepidation at this point, since there was still no phone #, and there were no questions at all about what I'd written. But I REALLY wanted that apartment! I wanted to believe it was REAL! So I sent my address and phone numbers.

Then I asked why the apartment was so inexpensive. The reply was:
Quote:
The montly rent is under the market because I'm looking for someone trustworthy and responsible to take care of my place.
But this person had hardly screened me at all!

So I looked carefully at the email I got from "rent.com." The return address was rent@usa.com. Not a good sign. Also, there were many grammatical errors, as well as this statement, which seems very unlikely to appear in an email from a legitimate business partnering with another business:
Quote:
If the MoneyGram Agent will ask the purpose of sending this money, tell them you are sending to a business partner as if you say that the funds are for a sale the transfer fees will increase considerable.

I looked on rent.com's website to see if they advertise an escrow service or a relationship with MoneyGram (which was highlighted in the email). They do not.

Then I googled "rent.com scam" and found this thread where others shared their stories. And I FINALLY concluded that, yep, this is a scam. RATS!!!! At least you guys spared me from sending the money!

Hi,
The apartment is available and it's located at 750 3rd Street NW, Washington, DC 20001, with one bedroom, one livingroom, one bath and one kitchen, square feet 851.
I really want to find a good and responsible tenant for it and i was hoping if you can send me some personal informations about yourself. The monthly rent of $950 will include all utilities such as water, electricity, internet, cable, parking etc.
The only problem is that i had to move with my job to Jefferson City, MO (i'm an Air Force MSgt - Whiteman Airforce Base) where i am now and i left the keys and contract already signed by me at Rent.com and they will handle the payment and delivery for us.
If you want to know more about how this deal can work please get back to me ASAP and i will send you the details step by step. Thank you and hope to hear back from you.
Regards,
Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey and thanks for taking the time to reply.
I am moved to dc for work as well, new position as a Sous Chef at a Restaurant in Dc, so my job is pretty safe. We are a couple of young people, my wife is studying to be a Computer Engineer and we have a medium dog called luna.
We are planning the move in date to be either june 15th or july 1st.
We really loved the place! Is it furnished? Because we have our own furniture...
I would like some info regarding the move in price, meaning the total needed to move in to the apt.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Regards,

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

The same story I've heard repeated here is almost our exact story. Fortunately, before we sent any money, something clicked about a Craigslist warning and I decided to do a search. I found you awesome people! And thank the gods, because the pictures he sent me were so beautiful, I was ready to do anything to get this apartment.

This guy is using a new website <http://www.smartrentonline.com>, and his name (David Kariak) didn't raise any alarms when I googled it. I even e-mailed smartrentonline to ask them if this "procedure" he detailed was in fact proper. Never heard back from them, but I kept searching. I had the same warnings as the rest of you, rent is so low, e-mail has misspellings etc. but... it looked so pretty! There was also the interesting twist of his brother in Alberta...

I'm going to copy the e-mails here exactly in case I can help anyone else. Looks like this scam has been going on for a few years!

P.S. I did, unfortunately, give him my name, address, and phone number. Has anyone had any issues with that?

E-mail One

"Hello *****,

Thank you for your reply. As I told you before the rent for 1 month will be 1000CAD and damage deposit 1000CAD ( last month) with no extra fees and you will have full access to all the amenities of the building. The price will not increase for the whole period that you will stay there. I would also like to know how many people will live in the apartment and also which rental contract do you prefer- 6 months or 1 year rental contract with option of renewal. The monthly payments can be wired to my Canadian Bank Account (TD Bank) or we can setup a payment method that is suitable for both of us.

As I said in my first email, in this moment I'm in London, United Kingdom. We obviously we need a safe way to complete this deal. Like I told you , my brother lives in Calgary, Alberta and he can come to you and show the apartment . You maybe know there is a long distance so I need to be sure 100 % that you are an serious person so I can send him all this way .

The solution is a worldwide third party company called SmartRentOnline <http://www.smartrentonline.com> . We use this company to see that you are an trusting and serious person. They will provide assistance in handling the payment and delivery of the rental package ( they will verify the apartment documents and send you the rental contract) . With this procedure you will be able to check the apartment before I receive the payment. Please be aware that is NOT necessary for you to register with SmartRentOnline given that I'm a registered user for 4 years and I've made over 30 transactions with them so far. They are really professional and they have great services.

My phone number is +442032398159 (if you are calling from Canada you need to dial 011442032398159). You can call me or e-mail anytime you wish.

Let me know if you are interested so I can provide with all the steps of this transaction and my brother phone number ( also I need to contact my brother and set an appointment with you ) . You need to know everything about this process before we get this started. I think is right for both of us.

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon!
David"

E-mail Three

"Hi again *****,

You will only have to deposit to SmartRentOnline the first month of rent from contract and damage deposit 1000 $ + 1000 $ = 2000 $ CAD so they can proceed with the transaction . I will explain you step by step how this process will work:

1 - To start the process all I need is your full info(full name, address and a cell phone number).
2 - I will go at SmartRentOnline to deposit the keys and the contract on your name as the intended receiver.
3 - SmartRentOnline will check the package to see if everything is in order and also the legal papers that will come along with the keys and proof of ownership with their Real Estate Professional Department in London. They will also confirm with the building manager that I'm the legal owner of the apartment I'm renting to you.
4 - SmartRentOnline will send you a delivery notification to let you know they have the keys and the papers in their custody in which you will also have all the payment instructions to complete the money transfer to the SmartRentOnline Agent.
5 - At this point you will have to make a money deposit on the SmartRentOnline Agent Name for the amount we agreed, the total amount you shall deposit for the first month of rent ( and damage deposit ) . The payment needs to be sent within 24 hours after you receive the transaction details or else they will charge me an additional fee.
6 - After you make the deposit you will have to send the payment details to SmartRentOnline.
7 - SmartRentOnline will verify the transfer and if everything is in order they will inform me and I will tell my brother to come and show you the apartment .

8 - He will come and check the apartment with you , you have 5 days for inspection , you must contact SmartRentOnline to inform them if you keep the apt or not and if everything is in order you will instruct SmartRentOnline to send me the information about the money deposit and I will be able to receive the funds. If you don`t like the apartment they will be sending the money back to you and you will send back the keys and contract to my brother . SmartRentOnline can't release the funds without your approval.

Let me know if you have the funds available (2000 CAD$) so we can move forward and e-mail me your full information I requested. Any further questions regarding the transaction you can call me or e-mail me.

Thanks
David

PS : My brother phone`s number is : 587-333-3018."

I received the exact same e-mails (word for word) for an apartment in Toronto from a "David Kariak". I just discovered tonight that it is in fact a scam. After asking a few times for the exact address of the apartment, and with "David" simply sidestepping the question each time, I started to become suspicious. It's the same situation though where the apartment was so nice, and such a good price, I didn't want to believe there was anything wrong with it. I was just about to e-mail him my information when I decided to do more research into "Smart Rent Online" and wasn't satisfied with the limited amount I found online. It's so upsetting that there are people out there that are proving all the naysayers right who say something is 'too good to be true'.

To think I almost transferred my money to this David Kariak!

I had the EXACT SAME EMAILS and INSTRUCTIONS as Citrus.
I was a bit confused by the fact that he had started the whole thing without confirming certain details I needed to know or that he was so open to rent it to me without a background check or anything. I didn't find anything online about smartrentonline.com (If it's trustworthy or not), so I thought it was legitimate.

Whatever the case may be, I'm glad I saw this post. Quite disappointed I have to say.

Thanks ScamVictimUnited.com and citrus!

Thanks to share your experience. I have the same experience. I found a studio from vancouver.en.craigslist.ca. The studio looks very nice and only $750 include everything, usually the price over $1000. I plan to sign 6-month contract and also introduce it for my friend to rent it after me. When I get the third email, I am suspect whether the smart rent online is reliable or not, so I Google it. Luckily, I found the similar experience here. Thank you everyone!

I came across this "David Kariak" fellow myself. He's been trying to sell me a MacBook Pro via craigslist. He will not reveal his address or the possibility of when to meet and he keeps pressuring the situation with a Nov 29th date

Please see his most recent email below:

First of all I want to tell you that I am an civil engineer and I just received an contract to an oil company in Medicine Hat, Alberta ( Imperial Oil ) . My number is : 587-333-3018 .

Obviously we need a safe way to complete this deal. The solution is a worldwide third party company: Ego Pay (www.egopay.com) -I used them in over 15 transactions and everything was perfect , this is the main reason for using them again ( they have over 3 millions of customers every year ) . They will provide assistance in handling the payment and delivery of the macbook .With this procedure you will be able to check the macbook before I receive the payment .

I will send you more pictures with serial number and other important information .If you are interested all you have to do is to send me your full name , shipping address and I will start this transaction asap .

Please give me your phone number and if you need any clarifications please feel free to call me at 587-333-3018 anytime you wish .

Thank You ,
David

This David Kariak guy posted a camerakit in craigslist vancouver for $1200 the 5dmII with the 24-105 L lens usually would cost over $2000. So I emailed him being interested but I was a bit hesitant. Im glad I googled him. He would've ran away with my money. I've attached the email conversation which sound truly believable.

Hey ,

Sorry for this late reply but I have been overwhelmed by the number of emails I got from interested buyers after listing the camera. As you can know the price is 1200 $ ( a little bit negotiable) for both body and lens .The Canon is like new and under warranty, has only 2000 pictures taken.I am selling it so low because I need to sell it before November 24th.

I already have tons of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out and I hope you won't make me loose time as it has already happened to me. If you will decide to buy it I am willing to pay for the shipping costs . If you are still interested e-mail me back.

Thanks
David

P.S: I had attached some photos with the camera!
