Some ad sites are now becoming more responsible in warning advertisers about counterfeit check scams and bogus buyers.
Here's the message http://www.adpost.com sends to new advertisers.
http://www.linkedads.com also alerts against scams.
Let's support these sites when we need to place ads!

===============================================
1. Protecting Yourself against Cyberspace Scams
===============================================

You can protect yourself by learning how to spot the danger signs of scams. Common scam techniques are given below.

If a buyer promises a cashiers check/money order/Western Union that overpays you, and then requests that you wire the difference to them after keeping some for yourself, beware! Scamsters who adopt this method typically use forged or bogus checks, and it's not difficult to realize who's overpaying who.

If you receive an reply from someone in Africa/Nigeria/Abidjan who claims to have millions of dollars from a dead husband/father/brother and wants you to help get the money out of their country - it just sounds too good to be true! This is commonly known as the Nigerian 419 scam, and is named after the corresponding penal code of Nigeria.

If a seller offers his goods at an unbelievably low price, you should ascertain if he's credible. Some scamsters take your money and run, leaving you with nothing but a lighter wallet. Pay by credit card where possible. In most cases, you can dispute credit card charges for non-delivery of goods.

You can also use an intermediary service such as escrow. For a small fee, an escrow service holds the payment, forwarding it to the seller only when the buyer has received the goods in working order. An escrow service will also act as a mediator in times of dispute.

If you do use an escrow service, please note that there are scamsters who set up fake escrow sites to facilitate their scams. If someone suggests using an escrow service other escrow.com then it is probably fake.

Adpost.com Classifieds provides a primarily free service. With postings that run into the hundreds of thousands daily, we can't monitor every single Ad or Reply. It is our whole community that comes together to fend off the scamsters and those who abuse our service. If you do come across any dubious people, please let us know and we'll remove them.

 Post subject: Trying to run a responsible website
PostPosted: Mon Jun 13, 2005 5:55 am
Hi, users of my website (http://www.franglo.com) have been increasingly targeted by scammers, and I am doing everything I can to combat this. I would suggest to the moderators of this board that they start a category for web site owners and moderators to share information about best practices for stopping & combatting fraud.

Site owners have the right to require all who post to identify themselves to the site admin. To include name, address, email address , phone number. You reserve the right to verify this information and if it does not verify to be true and accurate you then can ban that poster or restrict their activity on the site.

Personally I would require this verification process to take place before anyone can sell anything or post anything for sale on one of my sites.

Advise buyers to ALWAYS check out who they are dealing with and make it known to sellers that it is required as part of their privilege to post on the site, to provide a buyer with true and accurate information on who they are or lose privilege to post.

Encourage buyers to do their due dilligence to prevent fraud and encourage them to report anything suspicious immediately to the site admin.

If you run a site where posters are allowed to sell might I suggest something that will help cut down the temptation to defraud?

Each member beit a seller or buyer is assigned a unique identifier number
Before they can be assigned this number you have to do a verification process where you verify that they are who they say they are first. This can be done several ways:

1. If they are a business they have to have a business license or a tax ID number. They must provide this willfully and freely, you then verify this with the state of federal government records. This will also give you their registered address and phone number. You then call the number and talk to the person to verify they are at that number and exist.

2. for buyers you ask for name address phone number and you call that number to verify they are there and who they say they are.

3. bbbonline is a great tool to check for complaints on companies also badbusinessbureau.com. If a company has a complaint history or fraud history deny them the right to post on your site.

If a con artist knows you are watching and there is no way to get around giving true and lawful information they wont want to risk it on your site and will move on.

Haphazard posting practices get a lot of sites targeted by scammers and con artists, showing some muscle will help to cut down on the threats.
