My name is Keith and I work for the Birmingham, Alabama FBI. We have been getting a high volume of calls from people regarding scams and your website is been mentioned. Someone has apparently been giving out the Birmingham FBI telephone number as a contact to call regarding being the victim of a scam. That is all well and good--except that we only will work scam cases in our territory, i.e. Alabama. We have been getting calls from all over the US from people telling us they got our number off your website. Please correct this asap. Victims of scams (in states other than Alabama) will need to contact their local FBI office, not the Birmingham FBI. Hope this clears up any misconceptions.

I would like to remind people that it is not safe to give out your personal information to just anyone that you encounter on this message board. We at ScamVictimsUnited.com have given the members that WE trust either Gold Membership or made them Moderators . . . other than these members we would not advise sharing personal information. In most cases, if a member of law enforcement or some other government agency wants detailed information on victims they will contact me, and then I will gather the information for them, or they will join the board and once I am sure that they are who they say they are I will make them a Gold Member so that you know that it is okay to send them details of your case. If anyone is bothering you asking for information that you do not feel comfortable giving out, please feel free to notify me or one of the moderators and we will address it. Thank you,

If someone contacts you with a scam situation where they have wired the money out of the country. Do you do any follow-up, or is the reporting for you more of a recordkeeping type thing.

I have encouraged people to contact the FBI (and other agencies) when they become a victim of this scam, but I have never posted one phone number for all people to call no matter where they live.

The answer is: if someone calls us and tells they have been scammed, then we will get as much info as we can from them. All calls that we receive are routed to the duty agent and he determines if we have jurisdiction, takes the information, etc. The FBI does do follow up on these, but you know as well as I do that it's next to impossible to catch these people. The email addresses are usually spoofed, they run them through anonymizers (hope that's spelled correctly!!), etc. The FBI works these as diligently as we can. We try to tell people to have common sense about this kind of thing. Two sayings are very true now: "You can't get something for nothing" and "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." The problem is that the scammers are getting more and more sophisticated. Hope this helps!!

Another one that I would like to add is that the old thought that cashier's checks are "as good as gold" is no longer true . . . if it is made from paper it can be counterfeited somehow, so we all need to be more careful. It is sad, but that is the world that we live in.
