Post subject: Reactive rather than Proactive
PostPosted: Fri Aug 01, 2003 1:11 pm
One of the newer catch phrases of this new cenutry and the last part of the old one is "proactive" While I laud efforts to mount a proactive defense to Nigerian 419s, it is becomming more and more apparent that a reactive response is called for. This scam which has been around since to 1920s is still as active as ever. With the advent of new communication methods it has become commonplace to citizens in all walks of life. Not only are wealthy business men approached but more likely than not, victims who actually fall prey are naive, desperate families who are willing to grasp at any straw to save their own situations.
Warnings and education are vital to combatting Advance fee scams, but we need to do something reactive to catch perps and possibly even return lost funds to victims. It is an international problem that needs a cooprative, international effort. Suggestions anyone :?:

I agree, and it was because of that Scam Victims United was born. My hope was that we could not only warn and educate people about the scam, but gather enough people who would support our mission and we could join together to ask our government to make changes to protect others from becoming victims.

Ideas such as petitions or gathering in one place to make a bigger statement have been suggested, but at the time we were still only a group of about 100 people. I think now we might have the numbers to actually make some people listen.

EVERYONE lets get together and get something rocking in the way of pushing for legislation not only to toughen up on the criminals but also to make law enforcement have to adhere to Victims rights which means a Victim is a Victim NOT the Criminal, and law enforcement has to be pushed to doing the right things instead of laying false blame and revictimizing innocent people.
