The tutoring scams are STILL going on. Similar to the ad reported on July 15, 2009, the local paper (Chicago Tribune) printed an ad under the "Education" category on July 26, 2009 seeking a tutor for 2 kids three times a week, with responses to go to "jkleiber01@gmail.com".

... After responding to the e-mail address, a few days later, the ad-placer replied with an e-mail containing words similar to other reported ones, claiming his wife died, he alone was raising a 13-year-old son in the U.K. (-- there was NO word about the younger child mentioned in the ad! --) & speaking of how important it was to get someone who would properly tutor the boy who was coming to the U.S. alone. Typically, he wanted someone who would accept the tutoring money & then transfer the "BALANCE" of his payment (to be made by money order or check) to a "NANNY" who was to care for the boy...

... I felt "LEERY" at the way the English he'd used was very "CLUNKY" (bad) for someone supposedly living in the U.K. In response, to try to determine the real "seriousness" of the ad, in an e-mail, he was asked numerous specific QUESTIONS (about exactly WHERE the son was to be located, why he was coming here, what LEVEL he was at in each of the subjects to be taught, etc.)...

... In the response that was received today, the ad-placer used even WORSE ENGLISH than before, & very resolutely "AVOIDED" giving DIRECT ANSWERS to the specific questions asked. Further, the "13"-year-old son was suddenly described as being "14", & the sender also changed things to say he HIMSELF would be coming over, tho he'd stated the OPPOSITE in the previous letter.

... In addition, despite the fact that NO AMOUNT was ever AGREED to in any way at this end, he revised things to say that "the payment has been issued by my CLIENT out there in the states and you should receive it in a bank check issued out to your information [sic], You will cash it and send the remaining fund [sic] to his Nanny after deducting your money to tutor"...

... From the sender's giving the U.K. PHONE # " +44 70359 17386 ", I was able to use that (via Google) to find YOUR helpful WEB-SITE which made clear the same # & much of the same wording had been used to try to SCAM OTHER people in the past... Thus, any future "dealings" with the sender were STOPPED in their "tracks"...

KEEP UP the good work!...

i found out that i've been a victim of a tutoring scam. it was a bit late but i caught it before cashing a cashier's check. i knew there was something wrong because of the grammar of the e-mail and the fact that the person wanted me to wire money to his "nanny" and gave me an extra incentive.

anyway, i gave my address because i was still unsure. he eventually mailed me a cashier's check with no return address. i know this is a scam so i will not cash the check. i sent an e-mail back to the person that i will not be able to provide tutoring services and i will mail back his check. he insisted i take a cut for my troubles and wire the rest of the money and that i recommend another tutor.

my question is: what do i do with the check now?

regards,

scammed_dummy

I would destroy the check, cut off communication with the scammer, and post his email address on this site.

I also received a request to tutor the 15 year old son for Crisswell Alvin for 1 month from my craigslist posting. He said he lives out of the country, and had poor grammar. I did a google check, and found the same email on another posting: criswellalvin1960@gmail.com. The first email came from summerwayne01@gmail.com. I'm glad I checked this out, I won't be cashing any checks. What do you recommend I do next once I've found out this guy has scammed others in the past?

Glad you did not get scammed!

I would cut off all contact with this person.

Thank you for posting this. I too applied for tutoring job in craiglist and I baffled by this person's reply. Without even telling me he decided to send me a money order for more than the payment he needed to pay me and asked me to wire the rest to his daughters caretaker. So i was curious as to why he would do that and decided to do some research and i found this site. The email is word to word but his name is Braves Larry and his number is +60149382491. He said he is in Malaysia and his daughter is moving to NYC in December. I exchanged few email's with him but it seemed really shady to me that someone will send a stranger a money order in just the third email.
This website has helped me from being scammed. I sent him a reply telling him that I am going to turn in all the email exchanges and the mail he sent to me to the local police department and let them handle the rest.

Here is the first two email exchange with him. I hope this prevents others from being scammed too.

Thanks for your interest in the tutor job. My name is Braves Larry. Me and my family are relocating from Malaysia to the US this month, my 14Yrs old daughter (Christi) my only family would be coming with me to continue her studies in the state, i would like you to help her in this follows subjects, Mathematics, English writing and essay, Science and reading tutorial. She is a 5th grader, very brilliant, sharp and smart little girl. You are expect to tutor her 1hr per day, and 3 times per week, that is you are having to work with her for 3hrs total a week, the tutoring can take place in our house, your house or any nearest library(Morning or Afternoon) As we are moving to your locality but we have not reached final agreement with the landlord of the house so i would let you know on our address as time goes. My daughter would be the first to be in the state because i have to clear all my business transactions and i would join her later in July. I got a good and responsible nanny that will take proper care of her and also to always drive her down to the location of the lesson.

I am offering $50 per hr, kindly let me know if this charge is okay for you or if any let me know, So i can be able to send you the payment and book your service prior to my daughters arrival in the state. I'll be sending you the payment inform of a check for the tutorials while I'll also pay the Nanny that will look after her in the state while i join her later on, so as soon as you get the money/funds cleared you'll deduct cost of tutoring for the month and send balance to the nanny that would be looking after my daughter in the state.

So please Kindly get back to me with the following:

1.Your charges per hour.
2.Total charges for first month that he will be taught one hour per
day-3 times a week.

Respected Sir/Madam,

My name is Prasanna Baidya and I am replying to your listing on craiglist for a tutor. I believe I will be a good fit as I have 3 years experience helping others with their home works and studies (1 year with middle school and high school students at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg VA as an Academic Coach and 2 years tutoring math to college students at Liberty University). I am very enthusiastic and love mentoring. I find being a tutor very satisfying as I feel like I learn as much from the student as the student will learn from me. I think educating is one of the best thing a person can do in their life and having that opportunity is a blessing to me. I am a film student and currently doing my internship at Michael Mailer Films. I am looking for something useful and productive to do during my spare time and make some extra income and tutoring is the perfect opportunity for me. If you are still looking for a tutor let me know as I believe I'll be a good fit for the position. I am available all afternoon Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and evenings after 6 on Monday and Tuesday. I can also be available during weekends if necessary.

I have attached my resume along with this email for your convenience. For reference you can contact my former boss Earleen Burford by phone at 434-851-0425. She is the manager at the Keyhole (a convenient store on Campus at Liberty University). And my Developmental Math center supervisor Dr. Spradlin by email at kspradlin@liberty.edu. I can be contacted by e-mail or by phone at 727-415-8597. I am eagerly looking forward to hear from you. Thank you for this opportunity.

Sincerely,

Prasanna Baidya
