Thanks for the interest shown in the ad, my name is Michael Davis and I am an interior decorator; I have a large client base both within the country in major cities and outside the country making it inevitable for me to travel every once a while having to multitask and handle a whole lot of things; this has prompted me to seek a very competent, hardworking and trustworthy assistant in Canada. I was formerly based in Alberta but had to relocate to New york (United States) so that I can monitor my business which is just starting to grow here; it has become quite a cumbersome task traveling back and forth and therefore, I am in need of someone that can handle certain task so that the profit being made from clients over there in Canada will not be forfeited while still maintaining the high quality standard that has endeared many customers to me.

Please note that this position is not office based for now because of my frequent travels and tight schedules, it's a part-time, work from home basis and the flexibility means that there will be busier weeks than others, so it's a little difficult judging the exact number of hours you'll be doing per week. If you can manage your time properly, this job may even give you some extra while you do something else on the side.

Your major duties for now will be arranging flights schedules for me and reminding me about them, receiving payment from prospective customers and making payment to my raw material supplier. Payment method from my clients includes cash, checks, Money Order or money transfer. When payment is in form of a check or MO, you would get it cashed and send the funds to an information that would be giving to you. You will be paid $400 weekly as your basic wage and allowances will be provided in form of bonus in some weeks. For the time being, your pay will be deducted from payments sent to you from our customers.

Permit me to use the coming week to test your efficiency and diligence towards all this, also to work out your time schedule and fit it to mine. I really need to find the perfect person for this job, I'm confident you can take up the challenge and on the long run we should have a relatively sound working relationship between us. There is no such job as cashing payments for someone and sending a balance somewhere else, it's technically the same as Money Laundering. The Money Orders are certain to be a fake and you will be liable to repay the full amount once they realise this. There is also a high degree of risk that you could be reported to the police for fraud.

This guy is pulling the same scam again, using a slightly different personal name, business name, and email. My radar was definitely suspicious about this one. When I voiced my suspicions and asked to speak with him, he sent the same email as above and gave me a number in Ireland. Don't buy this guy!

I've just had some correspondence with this guys which is exactly the same as above. My suspicions were aroused when we kept mentioning money orders and other forms of payment.

The email came from marlypp54@gmail.com. The individual gave the name of Phillip Marker and said that he was an interior decorator. When I asked for some more information on the business, he said that the company was called Exquisit Decors. No company to be found on the internet by that name. He said that he was in the process of setting up the website. He also provided a number: +44 703 183 1380.

Luckily, a search on google for the number directed me to this site!

First email:

I have encountered the same interior designer needs a personal assistant scam. I luckily didn't end up working with him but I did send him my resume with has all of my contact information. I'm really just posting here so that anyone searching may find this. It seems like this guy isn't going to be stopped until the victims actively work to shut him down. I also contacted Craigslist to report his listing. The following are all the emails he sent me and you'll see it's word for word the same as the others.

And this is a personal message to "Phillip Marker" if he ever finds this post: Stop playing with good, honest people by trying to involve them unknowingly in your scams. Trust me, there are enough people out there who have no values and would probably do what you want if they knew the truth. Go find one of them and stop preying on innocent people who are looking for legitimate jobs.

I received a reply today from the same guy...under the name of Phillip Marker (kamhip54@gmail.com). Reads the same as the others, was posted in Chicago. The bad part is, the ad looked legitimate. Unfortunately, 80% of the replies I've gotten through CL postings have been fraud.



Hello Peter,

Thanks for the interest shown in the ad, my name is Phillip Marker and
I am an interior decorator; I have a large client base both within the
country in major cities and outside the country; this makes it
inevitable for me to travel every once a while having to multitask and
handle a whole lot of things; this has prompted me to seek a very
competent, hardworking and trustworthy assistant. I was formerly based
in Illinois but had to relocate to Tampa so that I can monitor my
business which is just starting to grow here; it has become quite a
cumbersome task traveling back and forth and therefore, I am in need
of someone that can handle certain task so that the profit being made
from clients over there in IL will not be forfeited while still
maintaining the high quality standard that has endeared many customers
to me.

Please note that this position is not office based for now because of
my frequent travels and tight schedules, it's a part-time, work from
home basis and the flexibility means that there will be busier weeks
than others, so it's a little difficult judging the exact number of
hours you'll be doing per week. If you can manage your time properly,
this job may even give you some extra while you do something else on
the side.

Your major duties for now will be arranging flights schedules for me
and reminding me about them, receiving payment from prospective
customers and making payment to my raw material supplier. Payment
method from my clients includes cash, checks, Money Order or money
transfer. When payment is in form of a check or MO, you would get it
cashed and send the funds to an information that would be giving to
you. You will be paid $400 weekly as your basic wage and allowances
will be provided in form of bonus in some weeks. For the time being,
your pay will be deducted from payments sent to you from our
customers.

Permit me to use the coming week to test your efficiency and diligence
towards all this, also to work out your time schedule and fit it with
mine. I really need to find the perfect person for this job, I'm
confident you can take up the challenge and on the long run we should
have a relatively sound working relationship between us...I do have a
pile of work and a number of unattended chores which you can
immediately assist me with, I hope we can meet up with the workload
eventually. It may be a little difficult working out the timing
initially but I belief soon, we should get used to it.

So I, like so many of you gave into Phillip Marker, and he sent me two checks. They're currently sitting at my house uncahsed because the minute I saw them I knew they were fake. Should I send them back to the return address...or what should I do with them?

Discontinue communications with them, tear up and throw out the checks and forget about them. That will keep "you" out of trouble. With these people working from another country there is not much more you can do.
