Attempting to purchase goods privately from someone overseas is hugely dangerous, there are plenty of warnings at Craigslist about it.

There are plenty of ways that a scam can develop but usually it will involve a faked delivery email asking you to send money before the goods are delivered. This comes under the general heading of 'Fake Escrow Scam'. If you are being asked to pay via Western Union or Moneygram, it is a scam.

Please provide more details, including the text of the persons response to you. Where is the advertisement? What country are they in? Have you checked the email header for the IP Address?

If they are in an African nation (or even mention one) run the heck away.
