Several weeks ago, I went to a check cashing store to cash a check I recieved in the mail. I thought it was from a woman who owed me money. When I went to cash it, the store called to verify the check, discovered it was a fraud and called the police. Instead of talking to me about it, they arrested me in front of my three children and put me in jail for 24 hours denying me a lawyer despite asking and denying me my phone call. I was released "pending investigation." I was in the local papers under the police report. I work in fundraising for a non-profit. This whole thing has shaken the foundation of my job. All of this because I was a victim. (The check never even got cashed!) Has anyone else been through this???

I personally have not, but there are many members of our board (including one of the moderators) who have been through this or are currently going throught this.

Please keep us up to date on how things go with your case. I think once a jury hears what you have to say they will see that you were the victim of a scam and not the person trying to scam the bank. A lot of these cases are dropped before they go to trial.

Don't give up! I was once where you are at now and I decided to fight! The procescution has to "prove" you were involved in the scheme. Without that proof it's almost impossible for a jury to convict. The people on the jury do not want to put a person in jail unless they are absolutely sure, so keep fighting! I was in court for months, my job was lost and my life was distroyed after the arrest, I even had to file bankruptcy but I fought with everything I had because I was the "victim" and in the end I prevailed. Another two years of fighting the bank and I won that too. It's a tough time right now but you "will" get thru this. What Shawn said is also true that most of the time these cases don't even make it to trial so don't give up!

I fail to see what thought was involved here. You blindly tired to cash an instrument without knowing from whence it came. Stop blaming others for your own greed and shortsightedness. You are where you are based your actions (you did try to cash a fraudulent item did you not ?) on greed and ignorance.

Again, I am going to direct you to my responce in this message thread
http://scamvictimsunited.com/phpBB2/vie ... c&start=15

If you can show us when we were greedy we would like you to point that out, but let's please do it in just one message thread and not all over the board.

n. An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth.

Over and over again on these boards people expect to get money for little or nothing. Just because someone calls it a "job" and asks you to cash checks doesn't mean it is.

Instead of wallowing in victim-hood and expecting redress for your actions ( from your bank, a class-action suit, or something similar) just get over it !!

Accept the fact you put yourself where you are based on an action. An action that you undertook willingly.

I was not wishing to possess more than what I deserved . . . what I deserved was the price of the car that I was selling, and that was the money that I was keeping possession of.

So, I guess that blows your "they are all greedy" statements out of the water.
