 I've advertised an item on Craig's List for $400. Imagine my surprise when requested to take it off the 'auction' and he would send me a check for $450 as a Cashier's check. First thing I did was think I had underpriced the item, but when finding it reasonable, I then thought "Ok, what's this lad up to?" Asking myself "lad" made me think of the fact that it was probably a scam.

Here was his intro through the Craigslist email forwarding:
Dear Seller,
i would like to know if this is still available for sale and what is the condition of it and for how long have you been using it?
Robert

so I played him a bit, and am now awaiting a 'cashier's check' that will now be even more than the $450 he offered at first, and the instructions are:

Thank you so much Boby,
I got your information but i would like to let you know bofore i procced with the issue of the check to you that you will be receiving a check of over payment. Once you get it, you will take it to your bank to cashed out . You are to remove $450 from the money and you will send the remaning balance of the check to my shiping company that will be coming down to your address to pick up the item from you to my destination immediately the recieve the remaning balance of the check from you. That'a all what i have to inform you before i could procced with the issue the check to you. Hope there's no problem about that?
Robert

Meanwhile I have contacted my bank, Wells Fargo, to ask them to assist in tracking down this worthless paper that will arrive if he follows through. I want them to CSI it (fingerprints, signatures, etc.) to see if we can locate the scammer, who will provide an address to send the "overpayment" to.

Should I involve the Secret Service and/or FBI?

Regards
CB

So from what you are saying, there is no sense for this board but whining and bitching? Isn't there something positive that can be done, say with an unopened check that may have fingerprints, proof of a counterfeit check, and a return address? C'mon, there must be some adventuresome types out there willing to work on these things instead of just crying AFTER the fact.

No . . . the reason for this board is

Education - get the info out there about these scams so that people like yourself can find our site and know for sure it is a scam

Resources - listings of places to report the scam and tips of what to do once you become a scam victim (like get a NEW bank account at a different bank ASAP and re-direct any direct deposit checks you have going to the account that was hit by the scam into the new account)

Support - Like any painful experience in life, many people find it comforting to know that others have been through the same thing that they have gone through and really understand them. It also offers hope and strenght that they too can overcome this.

What you are looking at doing is called scam-baiting, and there are sites that will show you a safe way to do this.

Thanks Shawn,
So since I have recognized a scam, and come to this board, the main thing you do is warn people who have ALREADY been scammed? I like to be pro-active, and already take part in http://www.419eater.com but this was my first encounter with a phony cashier's check. When i looked up on Google "cashier's check scam" it led me to this site.

I will not post any more here regarding this scam BAIT I am running unless members write to me personally via the site.

Regards
Bob

I am a bank investigator, if you did have prints where would you run them? The majority of these letters originate overseas. They usually go through a re handler here in the states, the real criminals are in Nigeria or Canada. Nobody I work with has any jurisdiction in Canada or Nigeria. The re handlers are normally innocent citizens who have gotten a job through the internet.

Keep watching TV, they always catch their guy.

Education...........and awareness, that is the key.

If you post some of the essentials from your experience......name, email address, drawee bank on the bad check.....those will help other people.

Go getem Colorado Bob, we are all behind you......way behind you.

Thanks for the sarcasm.

Guess rather than try to do anything we should all just be smart and not get scammed. Let these lads run amok, disturbing honest attempts at auctions, Craig's List, or whatever.

Maybe they are in Nigeria. If they use the US Mail, to perpetrate their crimes, that is still a crime.

I will continue my effort despite the sarcasm.

We hope that we can warn some people BEFORE they become victims. Like you, someone else may do a google search on cashier's checks, or the email address of their scammer . . . often that will bring them here and they will know for sure it is a scam. (this is why it would be great if you could also post any email addresses, names, phone numbers . . . basically anything YOU might do a search on, post it here)

We also work on projects with governement agencies and the media to bring more attention/awareness to the issue of scams . . . this helps to educate people and warn them before they are a victim.

Thanks Shawn,

I was at my bank today for other business and told them that I was expecting THREE cashier's cheques for Craig's list scams and they are going to help me in the reporting of this crime, through the bank's resources. I will also file a criminal report with the law enforcement in town. Maybe it's "pi**ing into the wind" but it may be worthwhile.

rennellsteph02@googlemail.com is one of the scammers' emails.
tanderson480@gmail.com is another
robert_hinton43@yahoo.com is the third. All from one Craig's listing!

They're sending me checks by UPS to avoid using the U.S. mail, and requesting the excess funds be sent to them by Western Union.

If you're interested I'll keep you posted.

Bob
