Post subject:  A REMINDER TO ALL...THOSE WHO LURK AND THOSE WHO POST

Here I am...the "lurking moderator" and I just want to issue a reminder and a "statement" if you will...

The site http://www.scamvictimsunited.com exists because HONEST people who were trying to transact LEGITIMATE business on the internet were scammed...and double victimized, if not triple, by their banks who have often acted wrongfully and, at times (like me) their local judicial systems.
This is NOT a place to call any victim of this international crime "Stupid" "Insane"...least of all "Greedy" etc.

YES, there are people out there who seem to want "something for nothing" and get taken to the cleaners for it. However, If you take the time to read the stories of those here, eSPECially in this section of the forum, ALL were 1) in need of money, and 2) trying to transact legitimate business via the internet.

Think what you will...I don't care...but, to quote my very Southern Grandmother, "If you don't have anything nice to say, keep your damn mouth shut!"

Bashing people who I can PROMISE you already feel stupid and hurt and angry on their own is UNACCEPTABLE here and will NOT be tolerated.

TXBELLE
(one who seems to have found her voice again...for today)

Post subject:  Nigerian Counterfeit Cashier's Checks

I would like to comment on a post I just read saying that we shouldn't call the victims "stupid". That is entirely true. These crooks are con men. They con innocent people. They are good at what they do. The people they are trying to con are individuals, like myself, who really need to sell their items. We need the money. And they know it. That makes me even more angry. I didn't go along with it, but I really feel some of the pain of those who did. We have to stop them. If every American knew of this scam, we could save thousands, maybe even millions of people from having to go through this. And we would stop the counterfeiters.

I fully agree Carol and txbelle, These guys are master conmen , they are actors and put up many fronts. They can change a story on the fly to keep a victim hooked. If anyone wants to know what they are capable of in this respect go to http://www.fraudaid.com and click on the section inside the mind of a conman. VERY interesting scenarios and these guys do all that and more.

Right on to "txbelle" the lurker moderator. Thanks to this group, I've become more educated to the tactics of the more insideous Internet scammers. Consequentially, when approached by "potential" scammers, I can easily identify them and cut the encounter short by letting them know that I am aware of the systematic scamming industry in Nigeria (or wherever). To date, I've been approached by 3 (including one potential presently: see my original post) and I am grateful beyond words to have this website to share my information with you all.

If you've been scammed, "IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT" and I, for one, hope you will continue to post your experiences and what you have learned from the experiences.

If you think people who've been scammed are idiots and you come here to flaunt your superiority and condemnation of victims, then you are "DEFINITLY" in the wrong place. Please just GO AWAY! Thank you.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the day when good people organize (Philanthropists listen up) and begin to take more proactive measures to eliminate scammers, one way the other, from the general population. I feel that is not as far away as one might think. I am certain that our government will only harm innocent people if they get involved.

Victims or "targets" are not helpless idiots. At worst, many victims are well meaning and ill advised. I'm guessing that many victims are actually very bright , well meaning people looking for entertainment, opportunities or just plain surfing for ideas and to relieve boredom.

IMO, anyone who knowingly wastes their time with a scammer after learning that they are indeed a scammer ought to do the right thing...do yourself a favor and just let it go. If you are not sure what to do, cut and paste all messages, dialogs and email addresses and save it in a safe place for furure reference. Then, as soon as you have a chance, please logon here to report your experience in as much detail as you've been resourceful enough to collect. You will help me and others to learn what is needed to identify scammers so that we can all work around them. If they cannot find victims, then they just may go away eventually.

Peace, Joy and Happy Surfing!

Post subject:  Contacting Oprah or other media about the scams

Has anyone contacted Oprah, Larry King, or other media concerning this matter? I think if enough of us can alert the public, these scams can be reduced.

Yes, we have contacted the media in the past. Our story was on NBC Nightly News and CBS Evening News, and on MSNBC.com

I have sent my story to Dateline, Oprah, Nightline, 20/20, 60 minutes, just to name a few. We have talked about doing a mass letter writing campaign (see messages at http://scamvictimsunited.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1008)

Maybe it is time that we rethink this idea.

Shawn,

I'll stand behind you 100%, like I'm sure everyone else will. Good to know that it's been aired. You know how Oprah is....... she could possibly catch those cons. Anyway, let me know whatever you do and I will be right beside you.

Have a super day,
Deb

ps: we're at the beginning of this whole mess and still trying to figure out where to begin

Post subject:  GREAT SITE!!

This site along with a few others have really helped me to understand what potential threats are out there. I am currently dealing with someone I believe to have sent me a fraudulant check and thanks to sites like this and Craigs list's scam warning I recognized a problem before it got to big (not that i would send someone any of my $$$ before i was sure about their check clearing). Thanks to this site i now see that it is possible for a fraud to clear at my bank and I get penalized later, not something im interested in. One of the biggest issues that has to do with the scams is NO ONE IS FOREWARNED ENOUGH!! Sites like Craigs List should have something about it in BOLD PRINT at the top of every page. not in e-mails that make it look like a minor warning put out to cover their asses.

"craigslist Advisory: Fraud and Scam Warning!
Please read our scam advisory page before replying to this message:
http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html

This warning is automatically attached to
ALL craigslist forwarded emails"

The above is ridiculous and really does not stress the point of the issue enough it whould . it should be something more like this:

craigslist Advisory: Fraud and Scam Warning!
IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED FOR YOUR PROTECTION THAT YOU READ OUR SCAM ADVISORY PAGE AND THE FOLLOWING SITES BEFORE REPLYING/DOING BUSINESS WITH ANYONE!!
http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html
http://scamvictimsunited.com/

(This warning is automatically attached to
ALL craigslist forwarded emails) why would you include something letting everyone know it is generic??? that only makes it appear as though it is unimportant, and people are naturally curious, if they think its only for them they might just open the link to check it out and get a better education on how to protect themselves.

I agree, it would be nice if more sites would have larger warnings so that more people knew about these scams, but I think back to when we were scammed in 2002 and there were NO warnings on any sites out there, so we are making some progress.

I think it really depends on the site and the owners of it. When I can actually talk with a real person who owns and operates a site I can usually get them to put a large warning with a link to us, but many of these larger sites you end up just getting the standard reply "thank you for your comments" email back from them.

All of this is why we are trying to bring more attention to these scams through the media and the letter writing campaign that we are doing. (go here for more details) http://scamvictimsunited.com/phpBB2/vie ... php?t=1008 and http://scamvictimsunited.com/phpBB2/vie ... php?t=1460

Hi
I live in Lancashire, England and the Company i work for is being used in a scam, these people are using our Company name, address and web page to verify the legitimacy of their job offer. We have tried for over 18 months to stop these people. We even closed our web page down for a while but they just opened their own. As i can warn the people that get intouch with us i feel frustrated that there are others out there getting riped off by people using our good Company name. Hope somebody out there can stop them and they get punished for what they do and not the victims.

I, too, have been scammed but I'm working with the right people to do something about this... would you mind contacting me. I need to find people, "cases" like mine to put together so that my case can be taken further if not the only three cases that have been reported will go "filed" which we all know what that means. Please send me your story! Anyone!!!

I was contacted via email, mailed (fed ex and usps) counterfeit money orders, cashed and verified by Wells Fargo employee, and now my account is overdrawn. And, I Western Unioned the money. Now here I am pennyless and distraught. Luckily, I figured it out before the bank did, if not I would be looking at felony charges, too. Bank is not helping any either.

Please contact me PLEASE Help me get cases together so that we can recover our own money at least.

LET'S DO SOMETHING TOGETHER!!!
