Post subject:  seeking scam victims in Canada

I am researching an article on cheque overpayment scams and would be interested in hearing the stories of those who fell for the scams or were approached by the scammers. I am particularly but not exclusively interested in hearing from Canadians. I am particularly interested in people's experiences with the banks.

The banks fall back on "depositor agreement," and hold the person who deposited the check responsible. Even where the bank personel is inexperienced or negligent, the bank still absorbs NONE of the loss. Banks are required to carry fraud insurance, yet it does not apply to these cases.

Our bank tried to use that one on us too. But we kept coming back with the fact that we had SEVERAL different bank emplyoees on several different levels tell us that the check was clear and good . . . even after the fact they still would state to us that "a cashier's check is good in 24 hours", and we would say "How could it be good in 24 hours, and then bad in one week? You can't have it both ways."

Plus, we made sure we had a LOT of media attention, and the bank actually lost customers because of it . . . people saw the story and went in and closed thier account with that bank, not because they knew us, but because of how the bank treated us.
